...bringing this thread back out to the main group mail list.  Sorry I let it drop for the last week or so.

I spoke with Merritt Pelkey at FF this month and he said their sponsorship with GoPro is close, but not here yet.  When they get it, he said he would be able to loan us one camera.  I suppose we should get started on the assumption that we won't get any camera for the time being.  Where are things at on this project?

I would be happy to start work on the prototype using Judd's design if everyone is cool with it.  Does anyone want to meet this week and work out the specs and parts list?  FF in May will come up very quickly and some time to troubleshoot needs to be factored into the project.  Let me know.  Thx!

A single overhead light with reflectors would be perfect, I would think.

So I tried it out last night, it was a little problematic, it wouldn't recognize the Kinect on win8 so I tried it on a win7 machine and was able to work. It would cut out and not recognize new points after a while. It probably would work better with better lighting and some tweaks. It is very cool and we should definitely look more into it but it is still the lower end of the spectrum in terms of 3D scanners and it wouldn't work with the matrix effect. Don't get me wrong though I think it is still really awesome.

Just downloaded the software, the demos look really cool! I also have the Kinect and the power cable for it, so hopefully I will be able to get it going tonight. I think I read somewhere that the Kinect only has like 480 resolution so we still might be better off going the photo booth route but I'm anxious to see what kind of results it will get.

Hey guys, I might have found a way to complete this project much easier. I found this free software:

It uses a single kinect, which I can lend for a while. It also doesn't require the internet to process the data. Giving us guaranteed success at FF.

Sorry for the lack of comments I've been doing al lot of googling on 3d scanners.

So bill and I met up Monday, and we talked about some design issues we might be encountering...

When we look at the 3 GoPro design:

Assumptions:

We will be using 123d catch.
We want to have this at first Friday, for May.

Issues:
Connecting to the internet at first Friday. possible answers: taking the clear to First Friday. checking to see how much data is used when moving pictures to the 123d catch servers.

If we rotate the platform, possible issues with the background, and the program matching consistent points.

How to get the pictures from the gopros to the website.

quality: 123D Catch automatically brings down the resolution of the images to 3MP. Check out the link for more info:

We also talked about using the kinetic system. The general idea would consist of PVC frame (like a fig rig,) that maybe would have some lights on it.

We plan on meeting up at Saturday  at the shop, and test out both options. I will bring my DSLR, and Kinetic to test it out.

Let me know if any of this doesn't make since. I am extremely tired.

(and sorry Bill for taking so long to write this e-mail.)

No problem Josh.  Hopefully the sketches are still up on the white board, but not a big deal if they're not.  The other camera option we came up with is to use an iPhone with the 123Catch app installed.  Just a thought for the prototype since FF is notoriously bad for wifi access and speed.  Thoughts?

I don't think we had a specific time today.  The shop is open from 3 -10 so anytime is ok.  I have to be there by 4pm latest to meet with a reporter, then Nate and I have to leave later in the evening to go look at a possible new piece of equipment for the danger room, but we'll be back after that.  Don't let my schedule stop you guys from meeting and discussing anything.  What time were you thinking about stopping in?

I could bring a 23” monitor to the event to show off the 3d model flythroughs that will hopefully grab some attention. Any ideas on cool models to capture?

Ok.  Here's the situation.  Thursday night, the shop is part of the Science Crawl for LV SciFest and we'll be doing a "pool noodle light saber" build for a flash mob at the Expo on Saturday.  It's scheduled for 7pm and should go for about an hour or so.  I'm willing to stay late to get anything done and will bring my camera with me (we need to adjust the settings on it anyway).  Friday is First Friday and the load-in time is between 3pm - 5pm.  It's a bitch to park anytime after that, especially if you have a large-ish project to carry into the event.  I can also work on this on Friday during the day prior to the event or Wednesday night after the soldering class if you guys are available.  That should end around 9pm and I can stay late.  Let me know what works best for your schedules.  We still need time to test and work out any bugs.

There's a class tomorrow night, so the shop will be open, but we can't really disturb the class while it's going on.  As long as we stay in the Danger Room area, we should be ok to work on stuff.  How detailed a model do you want to test on?  I may be able to find something interesting.

Forgot to mention that I'm assisting with the class on Wednesday.  If you guys want to help out, it's just basic soldering.  Also, if we can get this project working, do you want to show it at the SciFest Expo at Cashman Field on Saturday?  Load-in at the Expo is from 8am - 9:45am Saturday morning and the event goes from 10am - 5pm-ish.  Let me know.

I reloaded the files on the non-web app. I feel we didn't take enough pics, and we didn't make sure the cameras looked alike. The program thought we only took pics from the front. I don't think it helped that out first 3 models had all the same general colors, and maybe the consistent front light hurt us. If anyone else is down, I would like to try and work through these bad examples tomorrow. We would need internet at the spot, but if you guys want to tackle this latter, I understand. I do think it would be amazing to show several guys (who have known each other for less than a month,) working to complete a concept in front the the public. It could be seen as a performance art piece?!? Either way, I do feel like we have shown this can work, but we need to fine tune it!

Yea, I think we are defiantly on the right track, the rotating base design is a lot cheaper than the 40+ camera array and it will do the bullet time videos. The drawbacks are that the entire capture isn't instantaneous which shouldn't be too bad for a person capture as long as they stay completely still, though pets will probably be impossible... Here is a shot I found online from a maker fair where it looks like 40+ cameras all wired together inside a tent. There are a lot of things I would do differently, unfortunately his capture didn't come out very well despite all the effort put into the setup. I'm not super impressed with the photos from the go-pro, I've had several failed uploads possibly due to the wide angle lens distortion.
