As I mentioned above, the highest quality practice questions come from official sources. One excellent way to get your hands on official questions is to purchase Cambridge IELTS prep books with practice tests, since these tests will include Writing sections.

But the makers of the IELTS (Cambridge, British Council, and IELTS IDP) also offer quite a few free IELTS Writing questions online. Below is a roundup of pages from the four official IELTS websites where you can get official practice questions:

It is useful to practice doing a full test using the answer sheets before your test. Remember you get an extra 10 mins for transfering answers in listening but no extra time for transferring answers to the answer sheet in reading. Start by Understanding the IELTS Test Format - There are 4 sections and the pattern differs for paper based & computer based IELTS. You ought to know the test format like the back of your hand so there are no surprises during the test.

You will receive 4 full Question Papers upon registration. Try to keep these for the end to do timed full tests I borrowed a friend's IELTS Book to get another 4. You can reach out to people in your friends circle, libraries etc. to find these official books.

Use the IELTS Computer-Delivered Exam Software- The details of computer delivered IELTS and sample Questions on IDP's official website (you can find the same for British Council) - IDP Computer-Delivered IELTS is here

Use it to familiarize yourself with the test layout and software. The more you are acquainted with it, the more you feel at ease during your exam. You can focus on the Questions at hand instead of learning to navigate the UI.

I have to confess, I found the generic tips by many websites quite unhelpful so I searched for detailed videos and mostly used youtube and it was very impactful. I'm sure there's many more content creators out there but I'm here to share what worked for me.

IELTS WRITING- This is was my kryptonite. I can't write to save my life, even if I do, it's at snail crawl. This article has taken way too much of my Sunday yet I am persistent to finally write it today, now imagine the motivation to work a fulltime job & write practice letters and essays ( also read as zilch)

E2 IELTS - This youtube channel was my holy grail for this section. They breakdown the format and requirement for each of the 4 scoring metrics - Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resources, Grammar and accuracy

I watched them twice, noted the format in a notebook and wrote both my writing tasks with a similar format. It took me like 1 week to improve my pace & quality of writing after I started following a format. In this stage work on incorporating improved vocabulary and phrases, complex sentence types etc.

IELTS Reading - I'm a moderate paced reader, not extremely fast but not slow either. I read a lot of short form content - blogs, research papers, posts etc. and this helped me quite a bit with this section. However, the key for reading Qs is to be familiar with all the Question Types. I would recommend solving anywhere between 8-10 reading sections. It would be a good idea to practice with 55 minutes and keep 5-7 minutes for revision. This is the easiest section to score a band 9 in if practiced sufficiently.

IELTS Listening - This section becomes particularly difficult for those who aren't accustomed to accents. A strong recommendation would be to use official material as they have standard recordings - slow pace, standard accents etc. The true test of this section is the test of focus. It is extremely easy to loose out on marks by fidgeting or being distracted in the test center. It helps greatly to practice enough listening exercises until you are comfortable with the same.

Pace yourself - I'm a fast speaker, I decided to actively pace my self better. It looks better to speak slower through out that hurry and pause Respond to every Question with an answer and a supporting example or story.

Example: What is your favorite season of the year? My favorite season of the year is summer. I absolutely love summer time because growing up we could get away with eating far more ice cream in summers than any other time of the year.

Identify 10-15 good vocabulary words and incorporate at least 2 of them into your speaking For task 2, practice speaking for 2 minutes. You loose marks for speaking too little or pausing too much. I didn't follow a format but there are several formats available online to help you build a short 2 minute speech, one such example is the PPF method Practice! Practice Speaking to yourself, a friend or to a mirror. I used to make my friend ask me Speaking Questions when we'd go for walks at night. I also used many youtube videos to practice.

Side Note - My speaking test was quite unexpected and fast paced. I had more Questions than anticipated and we covered a wide range of topics - seasons, consumerism, purpose of life, minimalism. These topics are curated to your taste and usually go in the direction of the conversation.

Okay, and now many of you will have heard about the predicted death of newspapers as people increasingly access the TV and the internet for their news. And today I want to look at the USA which has very advanced news sources to see if this is actually true. In the USA, the main news sources without doubt are TV, the internet and the press. That is traditional newspapers and although they are each surviving and growing they are also changing. Obviously TV news has been around for a while and the early evening bulletins when people get in from work are very popular. Well, I suppose we traditionally think of the morning newspaper arriving on our doorstep with the daily news. Interestingly, this is not borne out by the statistics which show that readership in the US Is much higher when people have time to relax, when they're not working, especially on Sundays. The internet is also a popular weekend activity, but shows no variation with weekday access. So people are using the different sources in different ways. Interestingly, local radio has been hit less by the grip of quite strong local newspapers than by the internet, which is seemed to offer a better regional service, but just because the internet is seen as the new force in news media, does not mean it is dominant. Television has of course been Global for a while, but now technological changes which have fuelled the rise of online news have also allowed newspapers to print and distribute editions across the world. In fact, internet news, which is seen as the big competitor for traditional markets, does not offer that much variety. Often, the sources are the online versions of the newspapers. Whereas television, in order to offer something different, has had to come up with a much more mixed bag of reporting from hard news to light reports on celebrity events. Another issue is reliability. The internet is virtually unregulated. So anything can be reported there, whether true or not. Journalists on newspapers have fought a long hard battle to fight intervention and to retain the freedom of the press. Television, however, is seen as critical to political power and has become subject to harsh controls about what it can or cannot say.
