Why does archipelago need to be restarted?

I have noticed that whenever my machine goes down, i.e node2.example.com, pithos shows blank page after it comes back on. It is traced to archipelago. And when you restart it (archipelago), at times pithos starts displaying contents some other time it does not. I am really confused. What could be the issue?
