Thanks for the update!
Is there an install for 7.2.1 or does 7.2 need to be installed first?

Hi Angela,
7.2.1 has it's own installation & there's no prerequisite for this

FYI,

When I logged into passport advantage and click on "Download Finder" I was only seeing choices for DOORS and Synergy (not Change).  So I was not able to find the Change 5.3.1 download at first either.

I had to click on "View all my downloads" then I was able to find Change (and Change 5.3.1).

Hi Ujjwal,

being in the middle of a Synergy 7.2 FP05 and Change 5.3 FP06 roll-out .. is there any reason why we should NOT continue getting all sides and clients patched with those - now outdated - Fixpacks?

I am asking because I am wondering if those obsolete Fixpacks (that were released just 2 months ago) would introduce any risk to our environment that would have been fixed with Synergy 7.2.1 or Change 5.3.1?

It takes a while for us to finish our testing and to roll out the patches .. so I don't want to go ahead with the obsolete patches if this is not recommended. Otherwise I'd like to continue, assuming that FP05 is providing a better performance or robustness in comparison to FP04 of Synergy 7.2?

Any advice would be highly appreciated! -Rudi.

Hi Rudi,
Seems the process caused the confusion!
Synergy 7.2.1 & Change 5.3.1 are listed under Synergy 7.2 & Change 5.3 parent tabs - but that doesn't mean that the Fixpacks are obsoleted by the new release!
This is the 1st time that we have delivered a 3 digit release unlike the past convention of a 2 digit release
Rest assured that the FP's are properly tested & in case of any confusion Pls post the query to either Support or the group so this gets addressed quickly

Cheers,
Ujjwal

With regard to Synergy 7.2.1 – are we restricted to the “new” BSD archive format or is there still support for the old GNU based archives? If the old (GNU based) archives are still supported I suppose I could grab my old archive tools via “ccm_copy_tools”? The documentation is not clear when it comes to copy something from 7.2 to 7.2.1 so any advice would be appreciated.

Has the performance of the BSD archiver changed in 7.2.1 (compared to 7.2.0.x)?

Thank you, -Rudi.

Never mind my previous question. I found that info under:

http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/synhelp/v7m2r0/topic/com.ibm.rational.synergy.upgrade.win.doc/topics/s_c_upw_chng_synergy.html

Now while reading this, (I learned that 7.2.x is using the new ccm_delta archiver and no longer the BSD utilities) I stumbled across the following statement:

“You can use the Rational Synergy Web Administration Interface to convert old archives to the new 7.2 or later format. The conversion is required in Release 7.2 or later.”

Which I find confusing. I mean I now as a fact that we are running 7.2.0.5 without converting all of our databases (still using the old 6.5 archiver) .. so when exactly is this conversion required? For version 7.2.1 maybe?

Hello Rudi,

as far as I remember you will have to convert your archives before upgrading to 7.2.1 to avoid extensive runtimes for the upgrade process.

Although the “Conversion” tab is still available in the 7.2.1 admin interface. So I think it’s no MUST but a recommendation.

I will have a look in the presentations I got for 7.2.1 and come back to you later if no one else has more detailed information in the meantime.

Greetings from Dortmund,

Matthias

Hallo Matthias,

Thank you for that information – I am not sure what “extensive runtimes for the upgrade” might mean, but found problems with the ccm_delta archiver on our databases on 7.2.0.4 where an fs_check would run multiple days or fail silent while trying to extract large text files (100 MB +) from highly fragmented (reverse delta) archives with a couple of hundred versions. We spent a lot of time trying to get this to work (like it used to on version 6.5) and finally decided to stick with the old archiver (using ccm_copy_tools.bat and leaving those databases unconverted).

For that reason, I’d be interested to know if we even can upgrade from 7.2.0.5 to 7.2.1 while keeping the old archive format. Doesn’t seem to be documented anywhere clearly .. or I am just unable to find it.

Thank you,

-Rudi.

Hi Rudi,
I can understand that the documentation sounds a bit confusing especially if you bring the context of ccm_copy_tools
Everyone who has the knowledge of Telelogic versions knows that you have the option of GNU archiver & in that context the documentation doesn't try to reconcile
Pls note that the ccm_copy_tools was meant to be an ad-hoc option so that you can use AS-IS & subsequently in 7.2 we introduced the new archiver which can handle large files & performs better than before for commands

Bottom line, you can continue using your old archiver but it's recommended to use the new archiver - hence the documentation

As regards the issues with new archiver & fs_check, I would suggest contacting support to help out with diagnosis - they have expertise having managed such customer cases of late

Cheers,
Ujjwal
