Ohloh [1] makes some evaluations about Syncope source code: some of them
looks very positive, while other seems to prove that our community has
still many things to learn about how to make an Open Source project
successful.
It's time to make a step forward, it's time to try to let Syncope grow
properly as Open Source project.
About this, the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is by far the reference
and provides a way (the incubator [2]) for new Open Source projects to
apply for entering their community. The "Apache way" [3] show off most
valuable items to consider when deciding to move to the ASF.
By joining the ASF, we would expect to get more visibility and attract
more people to rising Syncope community; we would like to be sure as
well not to loose fellows that have been supporting Syncope so far, by
providing patches, reporting bugs and writing docs.
How would you see Syncope at the ASF? Will you still like to be involved
in it? Do you see any drawback or more advantages than ones outlined above?
We will soon provide a dedicated page on Syncope wiki [4] for outlining
Syncope incubation proposal.
Thanks in advance for your contribution.
Regards.

A preliminary draft of Syncope incubation proposal can be found at [4].
Unfortunately, it shows currently two main warnings about licensing of
Hibernate and DbUnit, because are both LGPLed; moreover, ConnId requires
a "special inclusion label".
I have opened an issue [5] for this: mainly, it's matter of verifying
whether Hibernate and DbUnit could be replaced or not, in terms of
features and performance.
Any contribution is very welcome.

Dear Syncopers,
Syncope IdM is today an Open Source project with some experience (inception is dated about beginning of 2010), some releases (we are approaching 0.7 Ritornello) and some significant deployments, mainly in Italy and the Netherlands (we will have more details about such success stories soon on our website).

Breaking news: our ASF incubation proposal has officially sent to Apache Incubator mailing list: http://old.nabble.com/-DISCUSS--Syncope-to-Join-the-Apache-Incubator-td33234739.html
Let's cross fingers ;-)
