You can install Ubuntu along side Windows and boot into either one when you turn on your computer. But that is beside the point. (You will probably NOT want to replace Windows if this is your first time installing Ubuntu.). Just select 'Install Ubuntu alongside Windows X' in the installer.

You can run Windows steam games on Linux through WINE. Though it will be a huge amount easier just running Linux Steam games on Ubuntu, it IS possible to run some of the windows games (though it may be slower). I think there are instructions here: _under_Linux#Step_2:_installing_steam.

I know this is an old question, but it is worth revisiting due to new features from Valve. As of August 21, 2018, the Beta version of the Steam Client for Linux extends Steam Play to support trying to run Windows games on Linux via their own special version of Wine called Proton. See:

Currently, only whitelisted games will run by default, and you do need a beta version. To get the beta version, enable it in the Steam client. Click on "Steam" button on the left corner of your Steam client window. With the Account pane selected, find the item "Beta participation" and click the "Change" button. In the new dialog, select "Beta participation" to "Steam Beta Update". Click "OK", then restart Steam. WARNING: It is possible that various things could be broken because of being in the beta, but so far that hasn't happened to me, and I enabled it a fairly long time ago. Once the beta version is running, there is a settings option "Enable Steam Play for all titles." Now you can try any Windows game and find out if it is one that works or not. Third party reports on what or doesn't work appear to be being collected here:

As far as I know none of the triple-A games of publishers like EA have been ported yet. It is not in Valves power to port these games since they don't belong to them.
The only thing Valve can do is trying to put some pressure on the publishers.

You can expect however to be able to play all of Valves own games within reasonable time.
So far Counter Strike, CS:Condition Zero, CS:Source, Half-Life 2, HL2: Lost Coast, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2 are available.

If you are dual-booting your machine, it is possible to symlink your steamapps folder from linux to the windows location. This will allow you to maintain only one copy of the game downloads. Example (stop steam first):

If you symlink your steamapps folder, make sure you have your windows drive mounted before launching steam or it will fail to login and present a network related error message. If you use 64-bit windows, the program files directory will need an (x86) suffix.

from steam (not on playon, the normal steam) try to go on the right side of the game picture --> click "Properties" --> accessibility --> force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool --> Protoss

For Windows, yes, the EA app has replaced Origin. For macOS, we'll be supporting the EA app as our primary gaming destination, but Origin for Mac will continue to be available for Mac players on macOS Mojave and older.

I want to play an windows error sound in my c# application when the user isnt allowed to enter more characters into a text box.Is there a .net framework api or have i to play it from wave files and if, how do i do this?

How would you recommend approaching this problem?Edit: Some context might help. The machines in question are rigged to behave as in-house cable TV channels for assisted living facilities and the like. They mostly show slideshows (with announcements, dining menus, etc.), and a lot of clients like to use WMP to play background music.

The machines are set to auto-install any OS updates from Microsoft. The problem is that this tends to make them reboot, which has the effect of knocking-out WMP until somebody notices and restarts it. This can result in very grumpy clients.

Thats it, you're done... You can close out of that window... Just make sure you follow the first 5 steps and uncheck "Show Hidden Files" (Organize>>Folder Options>> View>> Don't Show Hidden files folders and drives).

Hello,
So, I recently installed steam. And I had no problem in running games such as Dota 2 (even though it seems like Dota 2 is compatible with windows and MacOs only?). And now I want to buy a game called Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. In the store, it seems like it is compatible with windows only? So would that not work in my computer? How does steam actually work in linux? Do you only play games that are compatible with linux or does any game that works in windows work in linux as well (like wine)?

Proton is a translation layer which is built upon the great work of WINE. If you want to learn more, i suggest you look at the ArchWiki, as it is probably going to be more accurate at explaining than me:

Games aren't going to work in all situations, but things have gotten generally better for Linux gaming in the last few years. However, games use different libraries, engines, renderers, and anti-cheat software, which is why some just won't work on Linux. I am not sure if "Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition" will work, it's a gold rating, but I would definitely read the comments on before I would decide to purchase it.

Not in general, no. However, there exists compatibility layers, like Proton, that help with running Windows games in Linux. They're a work-in-progress though, and fiddling may be involved on an application-by-application basis.

When it was windows 7 I had set to disable explorer from starting via registry change and then use a script to play a video full screen in VLC, exit the video after a set amount of time, during which it would start explorer in the background. This is very clunky as you expect but worked very well until Windows 10.

On windows 7 this worked fine, but for Windows 10 on some PCs there is a good 10-15 seconds of it loading of other windows components first before the batch file runs which makes it pointless as the user already attempts to start working beforehand.

Triggerit from the task scheduler, export the task to xml and delete it from the scheduler and edit the xml file. Lok for the priority tags and set the prio to 0. Then it runs before anything else. Now reimport the xml to the scheduler and try it.

Okay so that got it down to the desktop loading after the welcome screen then about 2-4 seconds later the script launches a command window which seems to wait about a second before terminating explorer then there is a further 1-2 seconds as VLC launches

You may need to frequently run an app that requires administrator permissions, which always triggers a UAC (User Account Control) prompt. You do not want to click Yes or enter the administrator password every time, and you do not want to disable UAC...

Environment: ThinkPad L15 AMD Ryzen 16GB Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, Chrome (both fully updated.) I haven't tried another browser because things get goofy whenever I do (I've run into this with Firefox and AVG Secure Browser.)

Thank you for contacting the Canvas Community. We're sorry to hear you've been experiencing issues with getting videos to play. It is likely your internet browser and we recommend clearing the cache and cookies or trying another browser.

If that doesn't work, have you tried a difference device, browser, or network? If it isn't playing on anything there is a good likelihood that the links are bad are the videos themselves corrupt. Your teacher or canvas support would be able to confirm this for you. Hopefully this helps

Problem: iTunes will not play music or music videos on my PC. It will not play from the Apple store or library. Slider and timer does not work. Press play button and it indicates that the song should be playing and will show it paused when pressed again even though nothing has played.

I've been fighting with this problem for a while and have had no luck. While iTunes will not play on my PC, there is no problems with it playing on my iPhone. There are no problems syncing my phone and PC.

Use Edit > Preferences > Playback and look at the entry for Play Audio Using. This will normally be set to either Direct Sound or Windows Audio Session. Changing to the other setting may help. If not set back and try once more. If neither setting works see the second box in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. I suggest a direct download from Apple over the Microsoft Store version.
