Hi all,

SymPy mailing list receives many introductory emails from prospective GSoC applicants. This makes important discussions related to projects difficult to follow. This has been a problem for a long time. I think this has been discussed before but I cannot find the link to the thread.

Can we have a separate mailing list that has only potential mentors for introductory emails of GSoC? Emails related to proposal discussion can be sent to the main mailing list so that the rest of the community can provide feedback too.

Best,
Faisal

I agree, I think that would be really useful!

I actually think we should remove the requirement that students
introduce themselves on the mailing list. It tends to lead more to
spam than anything. A better way would be for students to introduce
themselves in a few sentences alongside their first PR. For students
who are looking for help, they should perhaps be directed to the
Gitter channel (or a separate Gitter channel if that gets too noisy).

In the end, I'm not sure if we can eliminate it entirely unless we do
it at the moderation level. I appreciate that the mailing list is
difficult to use at this time of year, though, so I do think we should
try to do something about it.

I found the link to the previous thread where this was last discussed.

I like the idea of having a separate channel in Gitter for GSoC.
But students should be encouraged to discuss their proposal
on the mailing list itself. The Gitter channel should be for asking
GSoC related questions and help.
