Good day

In the context of this clause in the license:

C. Neither the name of SymPy nor the names of its contributors
may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software
     without specific prior written permission.

Who should I ask for permission to use the SymPy name in a product built on SymPy?

Kind Regards
Vic

Dear Vic,

You can ask here on this email list. Please describe how you desire to use the SymPy name.

Jason

Thanks Jason

May I please use "SymPy" in sympy.ai?

My sincerest apologies for not asking earlier, my rationale for using the sympy.ai domain name is that it wraps SymPy in an agentic harness.
I am happy to display the footer: "Not endorsed by or affiliated with the SymPy Project." wherever it is used; currently suffixed by "[Permission pending]".

Kind regards
Vic

Hi Vic,

It seems like you are using the name sympy as a name for a commercial project. I don't think we will endorse such a use of our project name, as it is a textbook case of trademark confusion and your project is not affiliated with us.

We can see what other community members' opinions are.

Hi Vic,
I am not a law expert but if Sympy uses BSD license you can use its code as a heart for your project and sell it as a SaaS for those 1,000 USD, as you charge now. But the usage of Sympy name is a problem. The best you can do is rename the project, so you will avoid any future law disputes. I cannot speak for Sympy or NumFOCUS but it is common that ppl view this, in general, as pure parasitizing and it seemingly sheds a bad light on Sympy, too.

Cheers,
O.K.

You're right Jason and Oldřich, and I wouldn't be comfortable doing that either, without the developers' and community's consent.
Regardless of the future of sympy.ai, I would use different names for products and incorporation would obviously be under a different name and domain as well.
I value the work that the SymPy developers and community has done and I recognise that even by using the software I stand on the shoulders of giants.

My motivation for starting the project is to verify Ai answers on on particular problem that I'm working on, and I would love to contribute to the community e.g. provide verification to your "Compute with Gamma" functionality. I would need to extend some functionality around complex analysis and I am happy to contribute that back.

Maybe a different question to ask then is: what would you like https://sympy.ai to look like, or should it 404 like the other vacant domains? Also for llms.txt?

Kind regards
Vic

I tend to agree with Jason here, but it might be worth reaching out to
NumFOCUS and seeing if they have any opinions (NumFOCUS holds the
trademarks for its projects).
