Hi,
I am interested in working with sympy for GSOC but would like to
discuss it further with someone.
I have completed some computer science courses and this current
semester the course I am in focused on python. I have only taken
first year level classes so interested in either one of two directions

1) working on creating either an iOS or Android mobile app
or
2) work on one of the other sympy GSOC projects but due to my limited
math background (only linear algebra and derivatives) I am not certain
which idea would best suit me.

Thank you,
Daniel

In this case you may to go through this list (again)
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/GSoC-2012-Ideas and just choose
ideas which you like most. There still is some time, so you should be
able to find some literature on the topic to grasp the things you will
have to do and also ask us questions.

the equation editor idea looks interesting, who should I talk to about
what that project would look like?

You should keep all discussions transparent and ask whatever questions
you want on the channel. We will try to give as best a response as we
can.

I think the equation editor is going to be a ncurses based
application. In this case you might want to read up on the ncurses-
python documentation. Here is a starting point [1]. You might also
want to fish around for some open source equation editors. I could see
a few online (probably) implemented in Javascript.

Cheers!
Saptarshi

Hi,

For this case, I think it would be good to have some minimal
experience in developing mobile softwares (for iOS or Android).

I am available to help as a mentor about a SymPy GUI for Android
using Python SL4A.

Saptarshi would you be the mentor for the equation editor?

Probably not, although I have worked with ncurses before so I can
answer a few questions.

FWIW, DirectMath is a nice front-end to Maxima and Mathematica (though I've not used it for that) and it has an equation editor. It might be worth looking at to get some ideas. I also like the integrated ability to draw items in your document.

It's not clear yet. It would depend on what other projects are accepted.

I am putting together an proposal and I am at the stage of listing modules and timeline, what are your thoughts on what would be appropriate for the equation editor?
As well what is the deadline for submitting a patch (as per the proposal template/requirements)?

I do not have experience writing code for iOS or Android, so as of this time you would suggest I look at other opportunities?

    Hi,

Or you have to show something for iOS / Android until the deadline (April 6th, I think). It is my opinion, but it is good to see the other ones.

The patch needs to be submitted before the application deadline on
April 6. It needs to be merged before the results are announced on
April 23 (this is more our problem than yours, though).
