Introduction to Biodiversity Specimen Digitization

This free, online course is focused on introducing the creation of digital data about biodiversity specimens to those who are just beginning this activity.  For more information on learning objectives, see the course tile at https://digitizationacademy.org/courses.  This course is targeted at those already associated with a biodiversity collection, such as student technicians, collections management professionals, or curators. The course will be relevant to a diversity of collection types. Participants do not need prior knowledge of biodiversity informatics or specialized software. 

The course will occur on Mondays and Wednesdays from September 30 to October 23, 3pm ET to 4:30pm ET (=New York City time). Participants can expect to spend three hours per week in synchronous meetings and as much as two additional hours of preparation time per week outside class. So this is about a 20-hour time commitment.

The course will be delivered in English. Those interested in participating from outside the U.S. may apply.

The course will be led by Austin Mast, with contributions from David Jennings, Fritz Pichardo Marcano, and a panel of representatives from collection management systems.  

Applications are due by 9am ET on Wednesday, August 28. We plan to notify applicants of admission decisions by 5 pm ET on August 29.  We expect to cap the course at about 20 participants and will make admission decisions based on the relevance of your training to your organization's future activities and a desire to engage a diversity of perspectives.
