Happy New Year and welcome to the continuation of iDigBio’s Sustaining Collections Digitization Beyond NSF Funding webinar series! We are excited to kick off 2026 with two upcoming webinars focused on collaboration-driven infrastructure and streamlined collections data management. Register below.

January 20, 2026: Sustaining Digitization through Collaboration and Innovation at the Yale Peabody Museum (2:00-4:00pm ET)
Speakers:
Susan Butts (Yale Peabody Museum)
Gary Motz (Yale Peabody Museum)
Genevieve Rios (Yale Peabody Museum)

Abstract: The Yale Peabody Museum’s digitization infrastructure is sustained, in part, by fostering intentional collaboration among the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) collections at Yale University. The university’s IT organization has “Cultural Heritage IT” as one of its organizational pillars to support not only digitization, but the entire digital object lifecycle that includes digitization, publication as linked open data, digital asset management, and digital preservation. This collaboration emphasizes shared governance and impactful partnerships to address the varied needs of the diverse needs of all the collection unit partners.
In addition, the Yale Peabody Museum is working to develop novel approaches to distribute digitized collections information via a broad range of data portals that leverage standards-based approaches to sharing digitized data. As part of this work, the Peabody is pioneering the use of innovative technologies for digitization which include georeferencing and imaging workflows. Geospatial information for collections objects and collecting events are being re-addressed for continuous data improvement and multi-view imagery is being captured for metadata extraction and 3D modeling of specimens. In short, digitization and the metamorphosis of digital data at the YPM are critical functions that reflect the natural history and cultural heritage communities’ priorities as integral components of a modern museum’s critical function.
January 27, 2026: Streamlining Data Management with Specify Software (2:00-4:00pm ET)
Speakers:
Aimee Stewart (University of Kansas, Specify)
Theresa Miller (University of Kansas, Specify)

Abstract: For over 30 years, Specify, now the Specify Collections Consortium, has been supporting biological research museums and biorepositories to manage their collection data.  The Specify team has been continuously working to streamline the digitization process so users can be as efficient and effective as possible by developing tools to bulk upload data, bulk edit data, bulk upload attachments, merge data, and get a collection overview, all to help not only make collection data more visible and findable, and therefore fundable, but to make the data as polished as possible. This webinar will show some of the most common ways Specify can be used to streamline the data entry, editing, augmenting, and sharing process, as well as look over the upcoming developments to continue this work.
Thanks,
Shyla
