Configuration Information:
Version: pcANYWHERE32 8.0
Operating system: Windows NT 4.0 SP3

I installed the newer version of the Explorer 4.01 SP1 with the
oepatsp1.exe patch (on a German system), and then experienced
problems with pcAnywhere 8.0 that previously worked perfectly with
Explorer 4.0 on NT 4 SP3

After installing pcAnywhere, and starting Windows NT 4.0 SP3 with the
patch, as soon as the blue-green background for the desktop
background appears, NT blue-screens!
The system can be repaired by starting in the safe mode (VGA) and
de-installing pcAnywhere.

I looked at the MSGINA.DLL and AWGina.DLL (pcAnywhere - Symantec) in
the Registry, but AWGina.dll was not installed under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GinaDLL. The SSGina.dll of Dr. Solomon's
was installed as before with Explorer 4.0. Changing the GinaDll back
to MSGina.dll also does not help.

Do you know of this problem? I contacted the German Symantec hotline;
they have not had anyone with the new Explorer 4.01 SP1 (German) yet.
I have not tested it on a Win95 PC yet. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Lando:

Thank you for using our online discussion groups.

Most likely this is an issue that may be fixed with the latest update of
pcANYWHERE32 version 8.0. If you are using the German version of
pcANYWHERE32 version 8.0, download 802UPGE.EXE from this URL and apply it.

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/deutsch/produkten/pcanywhere/pcanywhere32/updates/

If the issue continues, obtain the following document from our Knowledge
Base and see if it corrects the problem.

Document Title: Windows NT Blue Screens and pcANYWHERE32

URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/pca.nsf/docid/199851255836

Good luck and please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hi Roy,

I did all that you recommended. I checked the registry entries. The
system with the older Explorer 4.0 (with pcA 8.0 installed) has the
identical entries to the machine with the Internet Explorer 4.01.

The awvideo.sys that should be in the \WinNT\System32\drivers
directory is not installed on any of the machines that work with ati
or S3 cards. (mentioned under point 7 of
URL:http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/pca.nsf/docid/199851255836
which delivers /docid/199852681825 and not 199851255836). On the Blue
Screen, the awvideo.sys driver seems to be the last one
required/loaded (before win32k.sys).

An identical machine to the one with the problem works with pcA 8.0
when the Internet Explorer 4.0 is installed, but the problem only
occurs when Explorer 4.01 is installed.
Installing the newer version of pcA 8.02d does not solve the problem
either. I suspect a driver conflict with a file delivered with the
new Internet Explorer V4.01

I am open for more suggestions.

Thanx
Lando Lehmann

In most cases, a blue screen issue with pcANYWHERE32 is due to the video
driver. Which video card and driver version is installed on the system?
Has the latest video driver from the vendor been applied to the system?
Also, are you running the German version of NT 4.0 and pcANYWHERE32 version
8.0?

Please let me know your response.

Hi Roy,

Configuration:

Hardware: CPU Pentium II/166 MHz
Graphics Card ATI 3D Rage II+DVD:
Driver Version 4.3.92, 4.0.0
and 4.4.105, 4.0.0 were both tested
Bios 113-38806-101
Chip GT-B2U3

Software: Win NT 4 SP3
Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 Patch 2636
pcAnywhere V8 & V8.02 were both tested

The only difference between two identical systems tested was the
Internet Explorer 4.0 on one (which works OK with pcAnywhere 8), and
IE 4.02 SP1 and Patch 2636.
I then installed the same software on another system with a Elsa
Graphics card, and pcAnywhere worked well with IE 4.01 SP1 Patch
2636!
The problem only arises when I install pcAnywhere on the
configuration above. I downloaded the newest driver from the ATI
website, which turned out to be older than that delivered with the
Graphics card. None of the two work with pcAnywhere.
I will contact ATI for a newer driver.

Thanx for your input so far.

Greetings
Lando Lehmann

Hi again Roy,

I am sorry to report that the other system with the ELSA Winner card
also bluescreens now. It did not do it the first time round after the
installation. The second an all the following attempts, it crashed.
It seems really to be a thing between IE 4.01 SP1 Patch 2636 and
pcAnywhere. Also note that all the software is in German.

I e-Mailed ATI for info. on a new driver.

Greetings :-}

Please let me know if the latest ATI Rage based driver corrects the
problem.

Thanks for the information on the video driver. There is a known issue
with pcANYWHERE32 and the ATI Rage based video driver. The driver
installation file ATI.INF that shipped with the ATI Rage video card
contains an error; it installs two video drivers into the system Registry,
but only copies one of the associated .DLL files into the WINNT\SYSTEM32
folder.

To resolve this issue, please obtain the following document from our
Knowledge Base:

Document Title: Installing pcANYWHERE32 8.0 on Windows NT 4.0 with an ATI
Rage-Based Video Card

Try this out and please let me know if the problem continues.

Hi Roy,

The problem seems to be fixed. The document

Solution B fixed it.

Thanks for the information!

I'm glad we were able to get pcANYWHERE32 working correctly. Also, thank
you for letting me know how the issue was resolved. If I can be of further
assistance, please let me know.

Hi Guyz ,

here's a solution for pc anywhere probs under nt with ati cards:

1. Reboot the system and select Windows NT Workstation 4.00 [VGA MODE] from
the boot menu.

2. Un-install pcAnywhere.

3. Expand the file 8514a.dll from the "i386" directory on the Windows NT 4.0
CD into the Windows NT "system32" directory, using the following command
line. The EXPAND utility is present on the Windows NT installation CD ROM.

X:\I386\EXPAND X:\I386\8514A.DL_ C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\8514A.DLL

Adjust the paths shown as appropriate to match your system. X: represents the
CD ROM drive letter which contains the Windows NT installation CD.

4. Once the file has been expanded, restart the computer, and re-install
pcAnywhere.

hope this helps...

cheers

l.
