This is a pcANYWHERE32 installation error. Before pcANYWHERE32 installs
its files, it expands them into the Temp directory. If there isn't enough
space in the Temp directory then it uses the root of drive C.
Check the location of your Temp directory and confirm that there is
adequate space available. To confirm where the Temp / Tmp directory is
located open the DOS prompt and execute the "Set" command (without the
quotes). Also, confirm that you have Read / Write access to the location
of this directory.
If the issue continues, the registry settings for the Symantec LiveUpdate
may not be pointing to the proper location. To resolve this issue, follow
these steps:
1. On the Start menu, click Run. The Run dialog box will appear.
2. Type REGEDIT and click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\SharedUsuage
4. Highlight the SharedUsage key. Double click LiveUpdate1 located on the
right hand side of the screen. If the LiveUpdate1 item does not exist, add
it in the following manner:
1. Highlight the SharedUsage key on the left-hand side of the screen.
2. Click on the Edit menu and select New. Click on String Value.
3. A text field will appear on the right hand side of the Registry
Editor, containing a flashing cursor. Backspace over the text in the field
and type:
LiveUpdate1
4. Press Enter.
5. Double click on LiveUpdate1 and proceed to the next step.
5. The Edit String dialog box displays. If the text in the Value data
field contains:
\LiveUpdate
change it to
C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate
NOTE: Please ensure there are no quotation marks in the Value data field.
Good luck and please let me know if the issue continues.

Hello Christian,
What language of pcANYWHERE are you installing? Is this a traditional
Chinese install of Windows NT? What is the file date of SETUP.EXE on
the pcANYWHERE CD-ROM?

Hi again,
here are the answers to your questions. The language of pcAnywhere we
would like to install is english.
The version of NT is Windows NT Server Version 4.00.1381 SP3. But I
can't get any information about the language installed. Every item we
have read says just it is a chinese version or language. We think it
is chinese simplified.
The date of the setup-file located in directory PCA32 is 97-8-18.
Thank's again for your help.

Hello Christian,
pcANYWHERE was updated for expanded compatibility with the Chinese
character set in version 8.01. The current version is 8.02 and your
CD is version 8.0. I recommend you contact our Customer Service
department to obtain an updated CD.
Customer Service in North America can be contacted at (800) 441-7234
or via email at cust...@symantec.com. If you are located outside
North America, please either let me know so I can give you the
appropriate number or email our Customer Service department so they
can put you in touch with the right people.
Hello again,
we bought a version as you recommendend above. The same error occurs.
We also have installed pcAnywhere under the english operation system
which the pc can be booted also and no problem. The difference
beetween both setups as far as I can see is the preset for the
installation path:
The drive letter under the english OS installation points to the
harddisk and under the chinese version the letter would be the
cd-drive .
We also have installed pcAnywhere on a further pc, which has chinese
NT Workstation system and it runs.

Has the CD-ROM drive been a recent addition to the system? Have any of the
NT drive letters been changed? If it has, this may be causing the issue.
This problem can be caused by the installer attempting to access a
directory and not being able to. To figure out which directory, look at
the installers % completed which will be:
10 %
The installer is trying to write the Symantec Registration files to the
directory ../Program Files/Common Files/Symantec Shared. The installer
appends the /Common Files/Symantec Shared to the string found in the
following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFi
lesDir
You can either modify this key so that it points to a Program Files
directory that the installer can write to, or you need to set the
permissions of the directory pointed to by the registry value
ProgramFilesDir so that the installer can create and write to this
directory.
84%
The installer is trying to access the directory <os drive>:\<nt
directory>\System32. You need to set the permissions on the System32
directory so that the installer can create and write to this directory.
95%
The installer is trying to access the directory <os drive>:\<nt
directory>\system32\drivers. You need to set the permissions on the
drivers directory so that the installer can create and write to this
directory.
This is documented in the KB:
Document Title: Error: "General file transfer error, please check your
target location and try again" when installing to Windows NT
URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/pca.nsf/docid/1998080506434112
Good luck and please let me know if the issue continues.
