We do not have a document available that provides steps for setting up
pcANYWHERE32 with MS Proxy Server 2.0. During our tests we have found that
connecting from a remote within the Proxy Server to a host outside will
connect fine. However, if the pcANYWHERE host is within the Proxy Server,
there will be connection issues.
The Proxy Server assigns IP addresses to systems behind the Server,
however, these are virtual IP addresses. pcANYWHERE is unable to connect
to a virtual IP address behind a Proxy Server. To pcANYWHERE this IP
address does not exist, therefore, it will not connect to the host. We are
looking into this issue, however, we cannot guarantee that we will be able
to pass through the Proxy Server and connect to a host behind the firewall
due to the virtual IP address information.
To determine if a remote outside the server can connect to a host behind
the server, try pinging the host from the remote. If the ping does not
connect then pcANYWHERE32 will not work.
Below is a resolution one client was able to use to correct this issue.
Try it out and please let me know if the issue continues.
The client and the server portion of proxy are two separate entities
altogether. The default server setup is NOT supposed to install the proxy
client on the server but that is exactly what I found and I sure didn't
remember installing it myself. Just check for a program group called
"Microsoft Proxy Client" and you know it was installed and is the culprit
behind this error. Microsofts Small Business Server does the same thing. I
don't understand all the technical aspects of the proxy client which we
could probably find at support.microsoft.com but it does change the way 95
and NT access the protocol stack. Windows 95 could have an Internet address
right on the NIC but if you install the proxy client it will intercept all
packets and use the server as a gateway no matter what. This was what I saw
as the problem that caused pcAnywhere not to attach properly to the stack.
Uninstalling the client caused that error to go away and I've never had it
back again. If I can be of any more help please let me know.
Good luck and please let me know if the issue continues.
