I've used PCANYWHERE v.8.0.1 a long time successfully on a Windows NT
4.0 server with SP3. Some days ago I installed Internet Explorer
v.3.02 and HTML Help Viewer 1.2. After that, pcAnywhere's host
service no longer started up. I tried uninstalling both packages, but
nothing helped: the result is still the same. I'm sure that these are
the only modifications since the last successful run of PCANYWHERE
host service.
When I try to launch the "Be a host" entry from PCANYWHERE, a window
containing the following error message appears: Could not start the
requested service. When trying to start the corresponding service
from Services, the following error message is generated: Could not
start the PCANYWHERE Host Service on \\TKU5. Error 0005: Access is
denied. Both attempts generate an entry in the event log with
identical contents:
The pcANYWHERE Host Service service failed to start due to the
following error:
Access is denied
The account specified for the service certainly has all necessary
rights. I've tried uninstalling & re-installing PCANYWHERE as well
with no success so far. Could you help, please?
Thank you for using our online discussion groups.
By default, pcANYWHERE installs in the C:\Program Files\pcANYWHERE folder.
However, Windows NT truncates the long file name "Program Files" to an 8.3
filename when it searches for a program to execute. If there is a folder
named "Program" at the root of the drive, Windows looks in that folder,
instead of the Program Files folder, and of course cannot find it.
The error message you see depends on the situation. Error messages include:
• "Could not start the requested service."
This occurs when attempting to launch a host from within the pcANYWHERE
main module.
• "Unable to start the pcANYWHERE Host service."
This occurs when launching a host item on the desktop.
• "Could not start the pcANYWHERE Host Service on \\(computer name). Error
0005: Access is denied."
This occurs when attempting to start the pcANYWHERE service from the
Services module in Control Panel.
• "Could not launch C:\Program Files\pcANYWHERE\awrem32.exe"
This occurs when attempting to launch a remote item from within the main
pcANYWHERE module.
To correct this situation, uninstall pcANYWHERE and reinstall it to folder
with a short file name. Try reinstalling to the root directory, ie.,
C:\PCA32. You can also rename the Program folder, but this could have
unwanted consequences for any applications you have installed to that
folder.
Good luck and please let me know if the issue continues.
