I have been a user of Norton Utilities ever since the DOS era, and
have been a very satisfied customer, especially for Norton's Speed
Disk utility. However, this time the darn thing just hang !
Yep, it went and did "defrag" for 4% and then stayed there. Nothing.
I checked with the Task Manager (the ctrl-alt-del thingy on XP), I was
told that SD was still "running". So I left the thing to "run", and
boy did it "run"
>From Saturday morning it ran until late nite, and I let it ran
throughout the nite. Sunday morning, the Norton Systemworks 2007 Speed
Disk still showed, would you believe it or not, "4%" !!
Definitely the thing hang, but according the the Task Manager again,
no, it's still "running".
Don't know what the Norton people are doing nowadays. Feel kinda sad
tho.

They might be able to help.
Two lessons:
Microsoft sucks.
Norton sucks bigger.

A number of experts agree that the retail AV version of McAfee, Norton and
Trend Micro has become cumbersome and bloated for the average user.
The retail version of Norton can play havoc with your pc. Uninstall it
using Norton's own uninstall tool
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
and get a refund :)
As suggested on the site, you may wish to print out the directions before
proceeding.
If this doesn't work use this:
Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Remove unwanted programs and traces easily
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
and/or
RegSeeker
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Then use NTREGOPT to compact the registry; Follow instructions.
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt
While Norton's removal tool usually gets the job done, you may also want to
go to:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
and download a copy of winsockxpfix just in case. Rarely, the removal of
NIS breakes the networking components in XP to the point where internet
access is impossible. This little utility will fix it back up.
Do not utilize more than one (1) real-time anti-virus scanning engine!
Disable the e-mail scanning function during installation (Custom
Installation on some AV apps.) as it provides no additional protection. In
fact, most of experts (incl. Norton) believe that scanning incoming and
outgoing mail causes e-mail file corruption.

A-S applications (grab'em all).
The effectiveness of an individual AV A-S scanners can be wide-ranging and
oftentimes a collection of scanners is best. There isn't one software that
cleans and immunizes you against everything. That's why you need multiple
products to do the job i.e. overlap their coverage - one may catch what
another may miss.

Here are the specs:
CPU: Pentium 4 - 2.66 GHz
HD: Western Digital 500 GB
Partitions: Drive C: NTFS 30 GB ( where the XP and programs reside)
Drive D: NTFS 100 GB
Drive E: NTFS 200 GB
Drive F: NTFS 150+ GB
I thought it's my machine that is at fault, so I even reformated the
disk. Then do the re--installing of OS and Norton SystemWorks, then do
the online updating of the OS and the Liveupdate of Norton SystemWorks
2007, then do the Disk Doctor to ensure there's no problem anywhere,
and then Speed Disk .... SAME THING HAPPENS 1
I tried XP's own "defragment" programs, it works. I even downloaded
some ntfs defragment freewares, they all work. The only thing that
refuses to work is Norton Speed Disk.
I don't know why.
And I think I'm giving up on Norton Speed Disk, at least for now.

In my case, the 30GB partition is 95% free ! And still Norton Speed
Disk got stuck there.
I'm a Norton Utilities user since DOS days also - and at that time, I
used both PCTools and NU. Now PCTools is no more, and NU is turning
into crabs. Kinda sad.
