boot from NIS2008 CD does not see SATA drive

Norton Internet Security 2008
booting from CD, installs Win98DOS
only the CD drive is seen & NAVDX can only scan the CD -- HD (RAID 1) is
SATA & no drive letter is assigned to it

From Vista, full NIS2008 scan finds no errors - however the quick scan locks
up as soon as it finds a problem file.
Computer also locks up periodically - apparently when a background NIS
update check is happening

Installation of Spybot locked up machine (early in install) UNTIL I
uninstalled NIS 2008

I was able to remove some spyware from Vista partition by running Spybot,
but when I re-installed NIS2008, QUICK scan still hung on a file (named
something like URLredirect....)

At present, only solution seems to be to keep (paid for) NIS 2008 off the
machine
Remaining spyware is still there, but apparently its only payload is to
interfere with Norton Quick scan

Any other ideas?
