My colleage and I have posted this to Symantec's web site, and I have
reposted here for greater visibility. If anyone could take the time
to help us find a possible solution, we'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi,

My server was hit by W32.Nimda.E@mm. After cleaning the machine with
the removal tool I noticed a yellow exclamation point on the vptray
shield icon. So I decided I would reinstall Norton AntiVirus. But
it won't install.

Details are:

W2K server - originally service pack 1 but I installed service
pack 2 to see if it would resolve the problem
Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5
Free disk space only about 480Mb (this should be enough, shouldn't
it?)

What I tried so far...

>Install service pack 2
>Reinstall internet explorer 5.5
>Install latest version of windows installer (msiexec)
>Did a windows file protection scan (sfc /scannow)
>Manually removed Norton AV as described in one of your tech articles
>Downloaded and ran the Windows installer cleanup utility
>Created a new account which is only a member of the administrators
group and tried installing from there
>Checked dcom permissions with dcomconfig
>checked registry key permissions
>Tried reinstalling everything (in the following order):
Symantec System Center
Norton AntiVirus Snap-in
Symantec System Center Console Add-ons
Quarantine console
Central Quarantine
and finally Norton AntiVirus - They all installed fine except
Norton AntiVirus
>Ran the install with logging enabled - here is the log file:

The only things I didn't try yet (that I can think of are cleaning
out the temp folders - will try that next) and reinstalling the OS
(my last resort).

Please HELP!!!

Thanks

installation problem

After some more attempts at a solution...

Since I sent the original post I tried the following...

>Reinstall W2K Server with SP2 (did an upgrade not a clean install)
>Install Internet Explorer 6
>Double checked registry entryies
>Manually created the Registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MS Setup (ACME)\User Info

This time I ran setup from the location on the hard disk where the CD
installer put the files (ie. C:\Program Files\NAV\NAVSetup\setup.exe)

The Windows Installer log file is here:

As you can see, it still does'nt work.

One other thing I noticed (not sure if it is important) is that one
of your suggested workarounds to this problem is to make sure
CREATOR/OWNER has full control on the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL... keys. Well on the advanced tab
of regedt32 security CREATOR\OWNER has full control on "subkeys
only". I tried changing this to full control on "this key and all
subkeys" but it always reverts back to the original settings. This
behavior happens on every W2K system I looked at so I figured it was
normal.

******* Playing in the regisrty may cause your OS to BS***********

IF you want to reinstall and it wont work,

Remove all component that can be uninstalled.

reboot

delete key from registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6
if they are still there

delete the NAV folders, depends on OS where they are, if they are there

reboot

then reinstall

That advice did not help me... We have already done the manual
uninstall that symantec has on their web site. That includes removing
that registry key. Is there anyone out there knowledgeable about our
problem?

Try just installing NAV Server and see if it works without all the
other products. It's easier to troubleshoot 1 app at a time.

any luck on this? we have the same problem. after laboriously
removing ALL the reg keys, we can't install either 7.6 or 7.5

No, there has been no correct resolution to this problem/thread. A
clean install of Win2K is the only thing we have not done, but we
really don't want to have to do that.
