On my home PC (WinXP SP3) I had Norton AntiVirus 2008 which ran
without a hitch.
Found out about Norton AntiVirus 2009, so I ordered the package (not
download). I received the package yesterday 3/2/2009.
Installation seemed to go OK. It automatically uninstalled 2008 (but
turned out is was NOT a complete uninstall).
After installation and Activation, I ran 2009. That's when the
problems started.
1) 2009 comes with a module called Sonar. Sonar removed a utility I
needed called Sleep.exe WITHOUT ASKING PERMISSION!
2) I contacted Norton Tech Support from the Help in 2009. After much
fumbling around by the Support Tech via remote control, the problem
SEEMED fixed. When I rebooted, found out it was NOT fixed, Sonar
removed Sleep.exe again. The workaround I used was to rename Sleep.exe
-> Delay.exe and that DID solve the Sonar problem.
3) NOW THE BIGGEST GLITCH - When I went to Shutdown my system I got
the infamous BSOD. Tried several things, no joy. Shutdown = BSOD.
Microsoft KB suggests to uninstall the last program installed as a
fix.
I uninstalled Norton AntiVirus 2009, found out I had to use the latest
Norton Removal Tool for a FULL uninstall. After that Shutdown
functioned normally.
I reinstalled Norton AntiVirus 2008 and my system is back to normal.
One good thing, when I contacted Norton Support to return AntiVirus
2009, the method used was to extend my AntiVirus 2008 Subscription 1yr
+ 6days. Much better than having to ship back the package.
On the issue of AntiVirus 2009:
- Since I am OFF-LINE 95% of the time, the Pulse Update feature does
not mean much
- LiveUpdate is integrated into AntiVirus 2009, but I prefer using
LiveUpdate Express (the newer LiveUpdate does not display details I
prefer)
- Then there's the Sonar problem of removing software WITHOUT
PERMISSION
So, I will not be using AntiVirus 2009. It's another example of
cramming a lot of tools that users MAY NOT want into a program.
My biggest complaint is with Symantec AntiVirus Corporate (which we
use at work) it has EVERYTHING in the classic mode (LiveUpdate
Express, classic user interface, etc.) but Norton versions are dumbed-
down, no OPTIONS for an Advanced user. Norton AntiVirus should have an
Advanced User install option, that would result in the same interface
as Symantec Antivirus.
