I am having trouble with my distinctive ring, I have one phone line,
but with a smart ring feature through BC Telephone. Single ring for
telephone and double ring for faxes. I have emailed US Robotics
regarding this feature with my modem and this is their reply:

Do I change this default setting in WinFax from S41=0 to S41=1?

I have emailed also to US Robotics again, but their response time is
5 business days, so I thought I would ask you guys.

Thanks for your help.

Heather

US ROBOTICS REPLY

Hello,
Thank you for contacting 3Com Online Support.I understand you are
having
some trouble with the Distinctive Ring features of your modem.
The 3Com/U.S. Robotics modems support distinctive ring as provided
by a majority of the North American telecommunication providers
polled in
conjunction with the Bellcore documented standards. The command to
enable
DRING is S41=1. The factory default for this command is S41=0. Once
enabled,

the modem will respond with "RING A|RING B|RING C|RING D," depending
on the
ring cadence observed from the telephone line.

Note that the complete ring cadence is separated from the next ring
cadence
by a period of 4 seconds without ring voltage.

RING A 2s ON 4s OFF
RING B 800ms ON 400ms OFF 800ms OFF 4s OFF
RING C 200ms ON 400ms OFF 200ms ON 400ms OFF 800ms ON 4s OFF
RING D 200ms ON 400ms OFF 800ms ON 400ms OFF 200ms ON 4s OFF

Distinctive Ring is handled completely by TAPI and the modem, The modem identifies the ring pattern and TAPI routes the call based
on the modem's feedback. WinFax and TalkWorks simply wait for TAPI to tell it what kind of call is coming in (voice or fax). Also
via distinctive ring WinFax does not effect data calls. Based on this 99% of Distinctive Ring problems are either modem, TAPI or
configuration Problems.

- You require Uni-modem V to be installed

- Make sure that the modem driver being used in windows 95 has 4 tabs, including Distinctive Ring TAB.

- A voice .INF file for your modem (Only these modem .INF files have settings for Distinctive ring)
