I am trying to find a fax program that works with my Ericsson SH888 cellular
telephone, and currently I am evaluating WinFax. I have come quite far: I am
able to send faxes very well, and reception seems to work also...but only
until a certain point. The reception always breaks down after the initiating
stages:
First, the computer will answer the call. The WinFax status will be
"Answering..." and I get the remote CSID on screen. Then the status will be
"Training..." for a long time, until the telephone disconnects after totally
about 40 seconds. Some seconds later, Winfax will lose interest as well, and
the reception window will disappear. Later there will be no trace whatsoever
of the incoming fax, not even a hint of the failure.

At Ericsson support they say they can't help this, and that Symantec should
have a solution...

I struggle also with another problem: Now and then, when working with
Winfax, I get the famous blue screen, with a fatal error in VXD: IRLAMPEX.
This can happen e.g. just as I enable the automatic reception setting. Funny
enough there is no file named anything like IRLAMPEX on my computer.

Here are my specifics:
Computer: IBM Thinkpad 390
Op.system: Windows 98, no service pack
Modem: Internal in the Ericsson SH888
Infrared connection between computer and telephone. (There is a cable
solution as well, but according to Ericsson the cable does not work with
Win98. I tried it anyway...in which case WinFax did not recognize the
modem.)
Cellular network: Norwegian NetCom.
Fax program: WinFax 8.0 eval.version. (I tried the 8.01 patch, but it made
the program crash at every startup.)
Modem init string: at&f
Fax init string: at&c1&d2s25=50s0=2
Or: AT&F&D2&C1+IFC=1,1;S7=55
Misc. settings: Com4, Class2, Cellular. Software float control.

Now, if these problems could just be resolved, I would become one happy
Symantec customer...
Finally I should mention that this computer and it's WinFax works perfectly with another faxmodem
that I have at work (Xircom 56K), so the very WinFax installation should be
OK.
