I did everything you suggested. I still can't get them to work
simultaneously. I got a message as follows:
TAPI is not accessible. Check the modem installation.
I checked the IRQ's; each modem is set to IRQ 03. One modem is on
COM 2, the other on COM 4. They have different I/O's. What else
should I try to make this work?

Thanks again.

Hello Deborah,

Please see the following web page for additional information regarding COM
port conflicts:

If both modems are using IRQ 3, you will have these types of problems.

Sincerely,

Eric, I indeed have an IRQ conflict. Both modems are set to IRQ3 by
Windows. I previously had someone try to override that setting and
use IRQ9 (my only remaining unassigned IRQ) and couldn't get Windows
to accept this assignment. I was told if I choose COM3 for the
second modem I will have conflicts with my mouse. It was suggested
that I change to a bus mouse to work around that problem. What are
your thoughts on helping me to get this work right?
BTW-My current IRQ settings are IRQ3-COM Port 2 and 4; IRQ4-COM Port
1 and Direct Memory Access; IRQ5-sound blaster

Thanks again for your help.

Hello Deborah,

You may need to install the modem on COM2 IRQ 3, but you would need to
disable the current COM port prior to doing this. This is usually done by
altering the CMOS setting for your computer configuration. Once you have
the com port disabled, COM2 IRQ 3 will be available for your modem.

Consult your hardware dealer for more details on this,

Sincerely,

I just want to make sure I understand. I have a serial mouse
installed on COM1, a modem installed on COM2 and a modem installed on
COM4. I wasn't clear what your directions were instructing me to do.

Hello Deborah,

Sorry, my previous message indicated to install the modem on COM2. If you
already have a modem on COM2, I would recommend moving the modem to COM3 and
an IRQ that is not used by any other device on your system.

In addition, if the modem you have installed is INTERNAL and is installed on
COM2, you must DISABLE your physical COM2 port from your motherboard BIOS
before the INTERNAL modem will function correctly. This does not apply if
the modem on COM2 is EXTERNAL, you do not disable the COM port in this case.

Eric,
I sent this message Sept 23 but never received a reply. Here it is
again.

Windows assigns the IRQ to 3 and I am not able to force a change to
the setting. In addition, I am told that COM1 with the mouse and COM3
with a modem will have conflicts, just like modems on COM2 and COM4
have conflicts. What have your experiences been? And how do I get
Windows to let me assign an IRQ that isn't currently being used?

Thanks for your help.
