Configuration Information:
Operating system: --Other--

I have just installed an upgrade to my modem.
It is an internal US Robotics Sportster 56000
with fax, data, voice, compatibility.
Upon upgrading, my modem was renamed as such:
U.S. Robotics 56K Voice INT.

The WinFax Pro 8.0 (upgraded to 8.03) asks to
configure the modem with the configuration
Wizard.
-The first page of making the U.S. Robotics 56K Voice INT as an
active modem went fine.
-It then asks me if I want to run the WinFax confuguration wizard, I
push Yes.
-Then it describes my modem (U.S. Robotics 56K Voice INT), I push
next.
-Setup then tests and vrifies the modem with the following:
Checking: U.S. Robotics 56K Voice INT
Status: Completed
Results: This modem supports Fax, Data, Voice.
This is a Class 1, Class 2.0 fax modem.
Max fax transmit speed: 14400 bps.
Max fax receive speed: 14400 bps.
This is a U.S. Robotics type voice modem
with speakerphone capabilities.
I push next.
-The next page states: "Setup was unable to automatically determine
the proper fax settings for your modem,
Please select the description that most closely matches yor modem,
and click Next."
Unfortunately there is absolutely no description in the
description box, and I am forced to press Back or Cancel.

HELP, Now I am totally unable to use my fax program and I need it
desperately to work. The Modem Configuration Wizard window appears
every time I start my computer, constantly reminding me that the
modem needs to be configured. What is the quickest and easiest
solution?
The modem worked perfectly until I did both upgrades (WinFax Pro and
US Robotics). If necessary, I am not
completely a computer novice, and I will follow step by step
instructions to even configure it manually.

Thank you,

Very desparate

P.S. Kindly use the above E-mail for your answers.

Hello Vytenis,

You experience any of the following:

- You run the fax/modem Configuration Wizard but Setup is unable to
determine the fax settings for your modem. You are prompted to specify the
manufacturer and model of your modem, but the list of available modems is
blank.

- You have applied the WinFax PRO 8.02 update and must configure your modem
to work with WinFax. When WinFax queries your modem the results are returned
accurately, but when you click Next or Shift+Next the modem list is blank.

- You try to install a new modem in WinFax, but the modem list is blank.
Other symptoms include COM ports not appearing in Windows NT 3.51 or only
the Administrator can see the modem list in Windows NT 4.0.

Solution:

Try each of the following procedures in turn to resolve your issue.

Copy DCCMODEM.DAT to the \WINFAX Folder

Copy the DCCMODEM.DAT file to the \WINFAX folder and reconfigure the modem
in WinFax PRO. The modem list should no longer be blank.

Close WinFax PRO and the Controller.
Click Start, point to Find and choose Files or Folders. The Find dialog box
appears.
Choose the drive on which you installed WinFax from the Look In drop-down
list.
In the Named field, type

dccmodem.DAT

and click Find Now. Windows will find and display all files matching your
search criteria in the lower half of the Find dialog box.
Highlight DCCMODEM.DAT and choose Copy from the Edit menu.
Start Windows Explorer and double click the \WINFAX folder. This is usually
located in the folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\SYMANTEC.
Highlight the \WINFAX folder and choose Paste from the Edit menu.
Close all currently running programs.
Start WinFax PRO and reconfigure your modem.

Corrupt or Missing WFX0001.DAT

Follow this procedure in case of a corrupt WFX0001.DAT configuration file.

Close all running programs.
Start Windows Explorer.
Locate the file WFX0001.DAT in your \WINFAX\DATA folder.
If you have this file, rename it to WFX0001.BAK.
Restart WinFax.

Corrupt or Missing DCCMODEM.DAT

Follow this procedure in case of a corrupt DCCMODEM.DAT configuration file.

Close all running programs.
Start Windows Explorer.
Locate and double click your \PROGRAM FILES\DELRINA\COMMON folder.
Rename the file DCCMODEM.DAT to DCCMODEM.BAK.
Install a new copy of DCCMODEM.DAT using one of the following procedures:

Download and Expand DCCMODEM.EXE

Download DCCMODEM.EXE from the Symantec FTP site. This file contains a list
of modem manufacturers and models, and is subject to periodic updates.
Close WinFax.
Copy DCCMODEM.EXE to C:\PROGRAM FILES\DELRINA\COMMON, then double click it
to expand the archive. This creates two files:

DCCMODEM.DAT
README.TXT

If you have renamed the old DCCMODEM.DAT, it will be replaced by the new
one.
Remove your modem from the Control Panel in Windows 95.
Start WinFax.
Choose Modem from the Setup menu.
Click Add to start the Modem Wizard. Proceed with modem reconfiguration by
following the on-screen prompts.

Custom Installation of Program Files

Reinstall WinFax PRO from the original installation CD or floppy disks.
Choose a Custom Installation and only choose to install the Program Files.
This will install a new copy of the DCCMODEM.DAT file.
After installing, run the Modem Configuration Wizard again in WinFax.

Copy DCCMODEM.DAT from Another Computer

If you have another computer with WinFax installed on it, you may copy the
DCCMODEM.DAT file from that computer.

Run the EDITREG.EXE Utility

Close WinFax and the WinFax PRO Controller.
Run the EDITREG.EXE utility, located in the \WINFAX directory. The utility
is installed to this directory by the WinFax PRO 8.02 update.
Start WinFax PRO.

Install Unimodem/V

CAUTION:
Do not install UNIMODEM/V in Windows NT. If you are using Windows NT 4.0,
install any standard, non Plug 'n' Play (PNP) 14400 modem driver to an
available COM port.

For all versions of Windows, first copy the DCCMODEM.DAT file from the
\SYMANTEC\COMMON directory, to the active \SYMANTEC\WINFAX directory.

If this solution does not solve the problem in Windows 95:

Copy UNIMODV.EXE from the \UNIMODV directory on the WinFax PRO 8.0
installation CD.
Double click or run UNIMODV.EXE
From Windows Explorer, right click UNIMODV.INF and choose Install from the
menu.
Restart Windows when the installation is complete.
Uninstall and reinstall your modem from the Modems applet in the Control
Panel.

Edit The TELEPHON.INI File

Click Start and then Run. The Run dialog box appear.
Type TELEPHON.INI in the Open field, then click OK. The TELEPHON.INI file
opens in Notepad.
Select Search / Find. The Find dialog box appears.
Type Providers in the Find what box, then click Find next. You should be
taken to the [Providers] section.
Make sure you have the line:
ProviderFilename0=unimdm.tsp
If it is different, type the word REM in front of the line, then add the
above line just below it.

Reset A Registry Key

A system registry key must be modified. Your version of WinFax PRO will
determine where this registry key is located.

Check Your Version of WinFax PRO

Start WinFax PRO.
Click the Help menu and choose About. Note your WinFax PRO version number.

CAUTION:
Symantec and Microsoft cannot offer technical support on their products if
any changes have been made to the Windows Registry. A mistake could require
you to reinstall Windows, and could also result in permanent data loss or
corrupted files.

We strongly encourage you to back up your system Registry before making any
changes. Please make sure you modify only the key(s) specified. If you are
not comfortable editing the Registry, please obtain assistance from a
professional.

Close all running programs.
Click Start, then choose Run. If you are using Windows NT 3.51, click File,
then choose Run. The Run dialog box appears.
If you are using Windows 95, type REGEDIT and click OK. The Windows 95
Registry Editor launches.
If you are using Windows NT, type REGEDT32 and click OK. The Windows NT
Registry Editor launches.
Browse to and highlight the following key:

For WinFax PRO 8.0 or 8.01:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Delrina\CommSuite\7.0\CommSuite\

For WinFax PRO 8.02:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Delrina\CommSuite\7.0\CommSuite\

Double click Common Path.
Ensure that the path contains a \ at the end of the string.
Exit the registry editor and restart Windows.

Third Party Software Applications

If you run any applications designed to share the modem or communications
port, you need to reinstall Windows 95 and WinFax. WinFax PRO is a
stand-alone product and third-party modem sharing or COM port sharing
utilities are not supported, as they can corrupt or replace Windows 95 *.DLL
files and TAPI settings.

Remove and Reinstall Modems in Windows and WinFax PRO

Close all running programs.
Click Start, point to Settings, and choose Control Panel. The Control Panel
window appears.
Double click System. The System Properties dialog box appears.
Click the Device Manager tab.
Double click Modems to expand it.
Highlight and remove every modem entry beneath Modems. You may see multiple
entries for the same modem.
Restart your computer. Windows should automatically detect your modem. If
Windows does not add the modem automatically, add it as follows:

Click Start, point to Settings, and choose Control Panel. The Control Panel
window appears.
Double click Modems. The Modems Properties dialog box appears.
Click Add. The Add New Modem Wizard starts.
Follow the on-screen instructions in the Add New Modem Wizard to add your
modem.

Start WinFax PRO.
Choose Modem from the Setup menu. The Modem Properties dialog box appears.
Choose your modem from the Active Modem drop-down list.
Highlight your modem in the Connection Devices list and click Properties.
The Modem Configuration Wizard appears.
Follow the on-screen instructions to configure your modem.
