Terry, go to Control Panel , System Devices and remove the modem.
Exit Windows
Return and let it redetect the modem.
When it finds it, click on HAVE DISK
Direct it to where you have the USR driver downloaded (make sure it is
expanded before you do this, if it requires unzipping, that is).
Install the new driver and make it active in Winfax.

Ann...I tried this and I have just gotten the modem working again
after three hours of having the system screwed up. WinFax loses US
Robotics Access, Inc. modem files so I can't reload the Tapi,
sometimes it won't let me use the "have disk" command and on and on.
Before I tried reloading, the US Robotics Tech (phone) had the modem
working exceptionally well in all areas..even Winfax/Talkworks except
it would only answer the first call. Now call discrimination doesn't
work and it won't answer any of the calls. This is a new, $2k
computer with a US Robotics 56K and a hundred bucks worth of Winfax.
How come it would work most of the time on Win95 on a 486 but now I
can't get it to operate right. Isn't there a release code to add to
get the program to release the port after each and every call? I
feel like I am worse off than before I tried re-loading the modem.

Terry:
I have no idea what has happened. It difficult to understand the
problem,when I'm not there.
Something obviously went wrong on the new install.
Try this;
Compare Windows and WinFax PRO Modem Drivers
Click Start, point to Settings, and choose Control Panel. The Control
Panel window appears.
Double click Modems. The Modems Properties dialog box appears.
Write down the description for the modem you are using with WinFax
PRO.
Click Cancel.
In WinFax PRO, click Setup, then Modems. The Modem Properties dialog
box appears.
Check if the modem in this dialog box matches the modem description
you noted in step 3.
If the description does not match, contact your modem manufacturer to
obtain the latest drivers for your modem.
Change Modem Initialization Speed
In WinFax, click Setup and choose Modem. The Modem Properties dialog
box appears.
Highlight the modem you use with WinFax and click Properties. The
Properties dialog box for your modem appears.
Change the Initialize baud rate to 19200 bps.
Click OK.
Check Modem Class
In WinFax, choose Modem from the Setup menu. The Modem Properties
dialog box appears.
Click Test All Ports.
A dialog box appears, containing the modem information.
Make a note of the class that the modem supports.
Click OK.
Click Properties.
Make sure the Fax Modem Type is currently setup to one of the
supported classes
If it is not, then either change to the correct class or reconfigure
modem in WinFax and select the correct class from list provided

......yes!

Did it. I found that the Modem discriptions match letter for letter,
the modem supports Class1/Class2.0 and WinFax is set to Class1 (don't
think that's the problem).
It won't recognize distinctive ring like it used to but it sends
faxes well and answers just fine....BUT ONLY ON THE FIRST CALL. I
still think that somewhere, the Talkworks program is not releasing
the port or something like that. When I try to check the modem after
letting it catch the first ring (and then I have to take it off
automatic receive) the Modem diagnostics says it can't because the
comm port is open.
Next?? Does Winfax 9.0 fix this? I am frustrated to the point that
maybe it is more economical on all the time that we've spend to
upgrade but I would have to price shop and know that the upgrade
would work. I am frustrated....so close yet so far.

>OK..I've deleted, installed, deleted, cleaned, installed...etc. The
>good news is that I have everything working perfect again -- caller
>ID, distinctive ring, fax services, voice profile schedules....EXCEPT
>TALKWORKS ONLY DOES ALL THIS ON THE FIRST CALL IT RECEIVES.
Terry:
I am restating the problem, just to make sure we are on the right
track.
Talkworks answers a call, takes the message, but doesn't disconnect
the phone line. YOu have to reboot the system to get the modem to
release the line?
Adjust Silence Detection Sensitivity
For WinFax PRO 8.0
Start WinFax PRO.
Click Setup and choose Receive. The TalkWorks Properties dialog box
appears.
Click the Voice tab.
Under Message Options, drag the Silence Detection Sensitivity slider
to the right.
Test for Silence Detection Compatibility
If the Silence Detection Sensitivity slider is grayed out or you are
still unable to resolve the problem, your modem may not support
Silence Detection.
Click Start, point to Programs, Accessories and choose HyperTerminal.
The HyperTerminal folder window appears.
Double click HyperTerminal or Hypertrm.exe. The HyperTerminal window
appears.
Type any name for your connection in the Name field of the Connection
Description dialog box.
Click OK. The Phone Number dialog box appears.
Type any number in the Phone Number field.
Choose your modem from the Connect Using drop-down list. The default
selection will do in most cases.
Click OK. The Connect dialog box appears.
Click Cancel.
In the blank HyperTerminal window, type:
ATZ
and press Enter. The modem should respond with OK. If your modem does
not respond or does not respond with OK, it is not configured properly
in Windows.
Type
AT+FCLASS=1
and press Enter. The modem should respond with OK.
Type
AT+FRS?
and press Enter. If the modem responds with ERROR, type
AT+FRS=?
instead and then press Enter.
If your modem still responds with ERROR, the modem does not support
silence detection and there is no guarantee that TalkWorks will work
correctly.
If you do not have TalkWorks installed or the steps above have not
resolved the issue, then the modem could be faulty. The modem is
responsible for disconnecting the phone line by itself. If it does
not, you may have replace the modem.
>NOPE...On the first call, Talkworks picks up and answers the call,
>fax or whatever. It does everything correctly. Then it disconnects
>the line because I can receive subsequent calls manually (pick up
>receiver) or I can select "manual receive" when it is ringing and it
>will pick up, give the message and record a response correctly or
>manually receive a fax correctly. However, TW will not AUTOMATICALLY
>receive any calls of any kind after the first one. It is like the
>program cannot re-set itself to listen for subsequent rings
>automatically.
Ok, that helps.
Click Start, point to Settings and choose Control Panel. The Control
Panel window appears.
Double click Modems. The Modems Properties dialog box appears.
Highlight the problem modem from the list and click Properties.
Click the Connection tab.
Click Advanced.
In the Extra Settings field, type
ATZ
Click OK.
The modem should now reset itself after every use.
>get talkworks to use. However, the file that talkworks is trying to
>call is usually has the last part of the file name cut off, so I
>think that is why is is unable to access it (u0d00000.w instead of
>u1d00000.wav, or something very close to that).
The following technote , I believe, addresses your issue. If not,
please relate the exact error message. Thanks.
You experience either or both of the following situations:
- You try to play a TalkWorks greeting and receive the following error
message: "Unable to load greeting file".
- You try to open a *.WAV file in Sound Recorder and receive the
following error message: "Cannot open WAV file".
Solution:
Uninstall and reinstall the Windows Audio Compression Codecs.
Click Start, point to Settings and choose Control Panel. The Control
Panel window appears.
Double click Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs Properties
dialog box appears.
Click the Windows Setup tab.
Highlight Multimedia and click Details.
Uncheck Audio Compression and click OK.
Click Apply.
Double click Multimedia.
Check Audio Compression and click OK.
Click OK.
If you still cannot open *.WAV files in Sound Recorder, you are
experiencing Windows sound system problems and must contact Microsoft
technical support for further assistance.
