I have a compaq Presario 19.2 data/fax/voice/voice view modem.
Everything works great except when a call is made in, the answering
machine comes on, after a few seconds beeps, and then goes off after
the hang up. The person calling says they do not hear a message and
after the beep they speak, but the message is blank when played. I
have checked the settings and volumes and everything seems OK. What
could it be?

Winfax/Talkworks only became compatible with the compaq voice chipset
at version 8.0.2. Make sure you are current. Updates are free from
our web site or by using LiveUpdate.

Good. Had to verify.
Some modems send a message to TalkWorks indicating that the handset
has been picked up even when it has not. When it receives this
message, TalkWorks hangs up prematurely.

To resolve this problem, TalkWorks must stop looking for the
"handsetup" signal. To do this, edit the TalkWorks script files
(called .VMU files) and look for all instances of the following line:

handsetup = GOODBYE_BODY

Place a semicolon (;) at the beginning of each of these lines.

NOTE:
We recommend making a backup copy of all .VMU files before you edit
them.

All .VMU files are located in the DATA directory (which is located
under the WINFAX directory).
All .VMU files are plain text files and can be edited in Notepad.
The following main .VMU files should be checked and edited:

ANNCTR2.VMU
FAXBACK2.VMU
MSGCTR2.VMU
STDCTR2.VMU

The .VMU file for your custom TalkWorks profile must be edited as well
This file is called <profile name>.VMU. For example, if you have a
profile called My Profile, the associated .VMU file is called My
Profile.VMU.

Once this is done TalkWorks will not hang up when a handsetup signal
occurs, whether it is generated by the modem or generated by someone
picking up an external handset. A possible permanent solution is to
try another modem or see if there is an upgraded firmware for your
current modem.

I tried what you said and rebooted and there was no change in my
coindition. To refresh, the answering machine comes on but no
greeting is played, there is a beep, and winfax says it is recording,
but no message is saved. The test in winfax works correctly, but when
people call in, no greeting is played and no messages are recorded.

Ok, that's closer.
Is this a custom greeting or one of ours?
Try not using the answering machine for now. All calls will be
directed to your recieve log. double clicking on it will play the
message.
Does it disconnect almost as fast as it connects, or is there a few
seconds like it's recording, as you state above?

There is a known error that doesn't necessarily display an error
message and that is the MMSystem error. This is documented in both the
Compaq and MicroSoft web sites, as a cause of this behaviour. Have you
looked there as well?

One of yours

I do not understand what you mean by this.

The winfax screen says it is recording

I searched compaq and microsoft knowledge bases and could find
nothing about the mmsystem error that remotely pertained to my
situation.

Please help me resolve this issue. Thank you.

I have an Actiontec desktalk 56K modem and my answering machine
worked fine for about a week then the exact same thing happened. I
also have Winfax pro 8.0.3. When someone calls I can here them talk
and it looks like a message is being recorded but when they hang up
no message is left.

The driver is corrupted. Download it again from Compaq.
Then remove the modem and exit Windows
Let Windows redetect the mdoem and install the new driver.

If it doesn't work in 8.0.3, it won't work in Winfax 9.

These instructions have worked for every Compaq users I have sent them
to. I hope it will help you also.

1. Obtain the modem driver update from the modem manufacturers web
site (which you've already done.)

2. Uninstall Winfax Pro.

3. Remove your modem entry in the Modems Control Panel.

4. Reboot. Your machine will then attempt to reinstall the modem. Let
Win95 reinstall it. If it doesn't find a file (att???.vxd), point it
to
your C:\Windows\System directory.

5. At this point, perform the modem driver update. It expands onto one
floppy and then you'll need to run setup from the "Run.." dialog box
under
the "Start" menu.

6. After the modem update, reinstall Winfax Pro 8.0, and manually
run the update patch from Symantec with everything closed
included Winfax Pro itself.

7. Rebooted the machine. Go into Winfax and start Winfax Modem Setup.

You may receive an error in testing ports, just click OK and it should
close.

Whenyou sup et answering option under Recieve Setup, the third panel
may be greyed out and see an error. That's ok.

When you exit Winfax you may receive this message that said WinFax
Pro wasn't configured to
work with your modem yet. So, start again. Winfax Pro. Go to
into the Modem Setup... dialog and it should select your modem.
