I have three PCs, I'll call them A, B & C.
A & B are essentially identical, running WinNT4 with SP3,
and pcA32 8.03 host. Both have IPX/SPX & SAP agent installed. These
machines are both NW3.11 LAN workstations via 10BaseT w/NE2000+ NICs.
Machine C is running Win98, and is connected to A via RAS/DUN, with
NETBEUI, IPX/SPX & TCP/IP protocols all working.
I want to control A using C, via SPX. The host list shows both A & B
with "unknown" status, and I can make a connection with B with no
problem, but not with A.
Now I disconnnect the modem and reconnect C via RAS/DUN to B. This
time I can establish an SPX connection with A but not with B! A & B
can control eachother via SPX with no problem.
What gives? Why can't I control the same machine that I have the
RAS/DUN connection with?
Hello David,
Thank you for using our online discussion groups.
We recommend using TCP/IP with Dial-Up Networking (DUN) and Remote
Access (RAS) if the RAS computer is Windows NT. While SPX may work, we
do not support it because is has been found to be problematic, such as
you are seeing.
Please let us know if using TCP/IP does not resolve the issue. Thank
you for your understanding.

Thanks for the tip, Larry. Gosh if there's one thing I've learned
about pcA over the past 2yrs it's that it it BUGGY!
To respond to your suggestion, the reason I'm trying for SPX is that
TCP/IP is flaky. For some reason I can't fathom, and doesn't seem to
be related to pcA itself, sometimes after establishing a TCP/IP
connnection via RAS/DUN, I can ping the host with no problem, but TCP
apps don't work. Any idea of what situation would cause ping to work
but no other TCP communications?
TIA,
David.
Thanks for this new information.

With all appropriate updates to pcANYWHERE32 and the operating system
and any hardware needed, pcANYWHERE32 should not be problematic. I am
assuming that you are referring to multiple issues using pcANYWHERE32.
To help with other or older issues, I recommend using our extensive
Knowledge Base at:
Symantec pcANYWHERE Knowledge Base

If your TCP/IP is "flaky", then most likely there is some issue with
your network. This will need to be resolved in order to enable
pcANYWHERE32 to work with it and Remote Access, since we do not
support using SPX or NetBIOS to an NT RAS computer.
I am not certain why "TCP apps" do not work. I recommend contacting
your network administrator (if you are not him!) for further
assistance with the network. Or, contact the respective vendor of the
applications that are failing to work.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks.
