Product: pcAnywhere32 V.8.0 for Win95/98
Installing under Win95 is not a problem.
Installing under Win95 that has been upgraded to Win98 is not a
problem.
However, install under a completely new installation of Win98 I
receive the error "_inso432 caused an invalid page fault in module
unknown" after clicking"skip" on online registartion. This occurrs
also if I try to online register.
As I said before an upgrade from 95 to 98 does not cause a problem.
I found a message in the newsgroup prior dealing with a similar crash
however the error was different and also was version 7.0.
I have tried also copying the contents of the install directory off
the CD to my hard drive and tried installation from there also with
the same result.
Thank you for using our online discussion groups.
Clean boot Windows 98 and install pcANYWHERE32 to a short name directory
and see if this corrects the issue. Please obtain the following document
from our Knowledge Base for instructions on clean booting Windows 98:
Document Title: How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 98

Also, confirm that the latest update for pcANYWHERE32 version 8.0 has been
applied to the system. To determine if the latest update for pcANYWHERE32
version 8.0 has been applied, start pcANYWHERE32 then select Help / About
pcANYWHERE and verify the version number. If the version is not 8.02,
build 220, then run LiveUpdate.
To run the LiveUpdate within pcANYWHERE, select Utilities / LiveUpdate.
This procedure will run automatically and update the current version to
8.02.
If you are unable to run LiveUpdate, download 802up_a.exe (4.8 megs) from
the following URL:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/pca/pcanywhere32_for_windows95nt.html
The following Periodic Update file from our Knowledge Base describes the
fixes with 8.02:

Good luck and please let me know if the issue continues.

Tried clean boot reinstall to a short directory (c:\pcaw8) and
received the same error "_inso432 caused an invalid page fault in

I cannot start pc anywhere 8.0 after this aborted install because it
gives the message "pcanywhere is not properly installed, please run
setup" even though all icons are installed to group and the program
has been inserted at least partially into the registry. I try to run
the uninstall program although this aborts with an "invalid
configuration or file corrupted" message.
I NEED this software installed.

An "Invalid page fault" error usually indicates a resource problem on the
system. How much RAM is on the PC? Also, after clean booting Windows 98,
press CTRL+ALT+DEL to display the Task List and see if there are other
programs being loaded. If there are, perform and End Task on all the
programs except Explorer. Also, in the System Tray, located in the same
area as the time (clock), disable any icons displayed in there and see if
this resolves the issue.

Confirm that none of the files in the c:\pcaw8 directory are set to Read
Only. If they are, remove this attribute and see if this corrects the
problem.
Roy,
This machine has 128 MB of PC-100 memory. All components are very
high end.
Problem persists after all suggestions. End task on all running
programs, clean boot, no files or folders are marked read only in the
pcaw8 directory.
What does the installation do after clicking "skip" in the online
registration screen?
Are files not being properly inserted into the Windows directory?
Possibly windows 98 will not allow the overwriting of a shared .dll
that pc anywhere requires a specific version of?
Can you send a list of these requirements so that I can compare
versions of required .dll's?
Thanks for your continued help until this is resolved.

When the "Skip" option is selected, the pcANYWHERE32 installer shuts down
and prompts the user to reboot the computer. The installer does not write
information to the directory or the registry at this point.

The issue is due to memory resource or software that is being loaded,
possibly from the registry. To check this in Windows 98, follow these
steps:
1. Select Start / Accessories / System Tools / System Information.
2. When the System Information dialog box appears, select Software
Environment / Starting Programs.
The Starting Programs dialog box will display all programs that were
started through Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, Startup, Win.ini, System,ini, and
the Registry. Most likely the issue may be due to a program running
through the registry. Try and determine what other programs are running
and see if it can be disabled. Once disabled verify that pcANYWHERE32 can
install and run properly.

Roy,
I did a clean boot using the System configuration utility, and I
disabled all startup registry items. Before attempting installation
again, I verified that there were no programs running.I looked at the
close program dialog box and also looked at the "mem" command at a
dos prompt. The system was absolutely clean of all add-in programs.
There was nothing running!
Could the problem be a resource conflict with a hardware device?
This is a brand new Super 7 machine with the following hardware:
Tyan Trinity mboard with via apollo chipset, 1mb L2 cache
AMD k-62 3d at 350mhz
128mb pc100 memory
STB Lightspeed 128 8mb AGP video card.
I beleive we have an adressable issue here. Please advise if you need
further details.

The issue may be with the video card and/or driver. Confirm with STB that
the latest video driver has been applied to the system. There web site is
at http://www.stb.com/.
If the latest video driver does not resolve the issue, boot the system to
SafeMode and see if this helps out.
Good luck and please let me know if the issue continues.

Please continue to post your messages to the public discussion groups as
Rebooted clean into safe mode and the problem continued.
I downloaded the newest video driver from STB and installed it.
Problem continued.
Tried again to clean boot and safe mode w/ new vid drivers and
problem continued.
Put in an old PCI video card and problem continued.
If you have any suggestion, I will try it.
note:
I formatted my hard drives after mboard and processor upgrade and
re-installed all my software. All other software re-installed without
a problem. Windows 98 was previously an upgrade over my last win95
os2 installation and pcaw8.0 was already installed in windows95 with
my old hardware.
This problem is on a very clean win98 install.
Perhaps I can check a list of required windows .dll's or .vxd's that
didn't get reinstalled with win 98? I have seen invalid page faults
occur in win 95 when a program tried to access a missing .dll or one
that was in a directory unknown to the program trying to access it.
Thanks.

I've searched both the pcANYWHERE Knowledge Base and the Windows 98
Technical Support Documents section, including the Windows 98 newsgroup
section for Microsoft and was unable to find anything on this issue. I'm
trying to determine if this is a pcANYWHERE InstallShield file or if it is
a Windows 98 file. Could you search your hard drive and see if this file
exists. If it does open the Properties for the file and determine who the
file belongs to.
Best regards,

Roy,
I looked everywhere for that file and cannot find it on my local
machine.
I did find the following Microsoft Knowledge base article:
Article ID: Q187540
Deals with a fault that occurs when trying to install windows ce onto
NT with Quarterdecks clean sweep installed. Since I have clean sweep
installed also, I removed it and tried reinstalling PCaw8.0 without
success. The issue continues.
Thanks,
Jay
