Cellular phones and cellular modems are not generally suited well for
use with high speed communications such that pcANYWHERE32 uses. This
is because they have a high degree of phone line noise most of the
time, which results in either slow or bad communications. pcANYWHERE32
requires a very stable, reliable connection; most of the time a
cellular connection cannot provide this.
I recommend decreasing the speeds of remote and host modems to help
resolve this issue. This needs to be done on both the remote and host.
The following steps will walk you through doing this:
1. From the main window of pcANYWHERE32, right click on the icon that
you will be using for your modem connection such as the MODEM icon.
2. Click on Properties.
3. Click on the Details button.
4. The Maximum speed is displayed at the bottom. Decrease this to the
next lowest setting.
5. Click on the OK button.
6. Click on the next OK button. This will take you back to the main
window of pcANYWHERE32.
If a lower speed does not help then set the speed down to the next
lower one on both the remote and host. Keep decreasing it until it
works, or until it is as low as 4800. If it is still not working at
4800, then there is most likely some other issue involved.
In addition to lowering the data rate, if both the remote and host
modems support MNP10, you can enable Use cellular protocol in the
Windows' modem properties. This generally allows a much faster
connection and can help prevent the modems from disconnecting due to
line noise. The following steps will walk you through doing this:
1. Follow steps 1 through 3 from the above steps.
2. Click on the Connection tab.
3. Click on the Advanced button.
4. Click on the Use cellular protocol to enable it.
5. Click on the OK button.
6. Click on the next OK button.
7. Click on the last OK button. This will take you back to the main
window of pcANYWHERE32.

This may be a modem related issue, not necessarily a cellular
modem/line issue. Can the remote connect to a different host
successfully?
I recommend calling our Symantec test host at (541) 334-4034. The
logon name and password are both TEST. Then hit CTRL+ALT+D (not
CTRL+ALT+DEL) to logon to the Windows NT host. Its logon name and
password are also TEST.
If you cannot connect to this host (it may be busy or otherwise), try
our other test host at (541) 334-7314.
If this still does not work, then either the modem is incapable of
connecting with standard modems, or as I described in my first
message, the speed and reliability of the cellular modem with remote
control is not sufficient to enable it to work to the hosts.
If so, using Prodigy may be your best solution.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks.
Hi again! I tried to give you some additional information yesterday,
but I got disconnected from Prodigy in the process and the
information when to the "Black hole" of the Internet. Here goes
again.
The Remote PC is a Toshiba 335CDT running Windows 98
with a Noteworthy NW288CR Modem and a Motorola MicroTAC/650 Cellular.
This PC will connect to HyperTerminal and FaxWorks (terminal mode or
Fax mode) using the Cellular, I actually sent a test fax to my fax
machine. This PC will, also, connect to pcAnywhere and Prodigy using
the same Modem with a landline, however; I chose to use the other
Modem, which is a Xircom CreditCard 56K Modem, when using the
landline for the additional speed.
The first host machine I have is:
Packard Bell Pentium 32MB,
running Windows 95 with Sound III 336SP
The second host machine I have is
Packard Bell Pentium 48MB,
running Windows 95 with Sound4.Winmodem (U.S. Robotics)
I chose pcAnywhere, because of its capablities to up and download
files and to few all aspects of my Windows and it works perfectly
with the landlines on either modem. I travel a great deal and it is
not always easy to get to a phone to make a long distance call--plus
I have had some problems in some places using a credit card.
I was unable to connect to your test line with the Cellular, but
connected without any problems using a landline.
Thanks for all your help! I guess that I am really disappointed that
I have not found a successful way to connect and view everything that
I would like to on either of my PCs using the Cellular. I spend a
extra ($250.) for the Cellular Modem that really has not help me. If
you have any other ideas, please let me know. I think I am going to
call Noteworthy/Port again and see if they will still let me return
the Modem and cable.
Thanks for this new additional information.

Was this performed successfully with the cell phone, or with the
landline?

If decreasing the data rate to 9600 or below does not enable you to
connect, then I am not certain what more we can do to resolve this,
since this appears to be an issue with the cellular connection. Did
you try setting the data rate to lower than 9600 on the remote and
host, such as to 2400?
What COM port and IRQ is the cellular modem configured to use? Was
this included with the laptop, or was it installed separately?
You may want to contact the modem's vendor for additional information.
They may have updated drivers for it, which may enable it to better
connect over cellular phones.
Please let us know if you need additional information or assistance
with this issue. Thanks.
