Host Cannot Initialize Modem

Version: pcANYWHERE32 8.0
Operating system: Windows 98
I have a new Gateway G6-350, 64 meg of ram, 10 gig hard drive, ATI
video card, 3com NIC connected to Novell server and SBS server. I
originally had a Sportster 28.8 modem and am now attempting to use a
US Robotice 56k modem. I have downloaded and installed the latest
modem drivers from the 3com site. I have upgraded pcAnywhere to
v.8.02. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software. I have
been in touch with your modems section to no avail.
I can use all of Microsoft communications programs with no problem.
I can use HyperTerminal to wait for a call. I can call and connect
with another pcAnywhere host. I can call Symantec's bulletin board
along with any other bulletin board. I dialed up 3coms bulletin
board and used USRSTATS to detect modem problems. Everything came up
fine. When I attempt to wait as a host I get the message "Error
Initializing Modem". Following is my modem log. I must set up
remote operations on this computer.
Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

Thank you for using our online discussion groups.
Is the USR 56K modem internal or external? What COM port and IRQ is it
set to use?
Can the computer dial out using pcANYWHERE32 as a remote?
This type of an error can be caused by a wide range of issues, such as
issues with the modem driver, the modem itself, or other software
running in memory that could be causing a conflict.
The following are a list of things to try:
Double check the item's properties. Right click on the item that you
want to use, such as the MODEM item. Then click on Properties. If a
warning box appears, then the item was not configured correctly for
use with your modem. Ensure that only the modem is selected on the
Device list. Then click on the OK button when you are finished. Now
try pcANYWHERE32 again to see if this resolved the issue.
Create a new item. Sometimes an existing item becomes corrupted, and
can cause issues. Ensure that it too is only using your modem after
you have finished creating it. Follow the above paragraph's steps in
checking its Device list.
Install a new modem driver into Windows, and then use that instead of
the existing one for pcANYWHERE32. Again, use the first paragraph's
instructions on how to update an item's properties. This time, select
the second modem driver, which may appear as "<modem name> #2" or a
similarly named item, with a "#2" added to it.
Check what else is running in memory. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to see a list
of applications. As a test, close everything down except for Explorer
and SysTray. If this allows pcANYWHERE32 to work, then something else
from this list is most likely accessing your modem in some manner, and
should not be ran simultaneously with pcANYWHERE32,
If all of these fail, then try using a different modem, or switch the
COM port that the modem is using. If you change the COM port, then
also make sure that you update pcANYWHERE32's properties again as the
first paragraph describes.

The modem is External and set to use Com 1 irq 4.
Yes the computer can dial out using pcAnywhere as a remote and I can connect
to another pcAnywhere host as stated in my original message.
I have tried 2 other external modems, both com ports, and new modem cables,
all with the same results. Yes the properties for the host were adjusted
each time.
I downloaded and copied the new modem .inf files into the inf folder of
Windows98.
I removed all the hosts and created new ones. I did shut down everything
that was loading at startup using the new System tools. I have uninstalled
and reinstalled pcAnywhere.
USRSTATS detected no modem problems as you can see by the modem log I sent
to you that the only problems occur when using pcAnywhere. There is no fax
software on the computer. Nothing is calling or interfering with the modem.
I tried everything you suggested before I posted to the group.

When I load Win95 the problem goes away. When Win98 is loaded the
problem re-appears. Hum? Same hardware same functionality only
difference is Win98. All other communication programs work fine.

What type of modem is in the computer? Is it internal or external?
What COM port and IRQ is it set to use?

Yes...I do need further information and assistance. I even carried my modem
from home to my office to test it out. So that now makes 4 different
modems. In case you are wondering....I use Win95 at home.

as Com3 on IRQ10
other machine

Did this issue occur before upgrading to Windows 98? If not, then most
likely your modem driver has become corrupted after the Windows 98
installation. I recommend removing it, and then reinstalling it to
resolve the issue.
Otherwise, the same information I posted to Iris and Bob are also
applicable to your issue:

upgrade my machine if you recall. I even tried an internal modem with the
latest drivers. The stock answers are not working here. There is a problem
with Win98 and pcAnywhere. My modem info file shows that the modem stops
working after the command AT#CID=1. There are no options on my phone line.
No caller ID, Call Waiting or Ring Discrimination.

removed my modem...then I hacked the registry and deleted all the modem
entries under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\
It seems that each time the modem was changed it created a new entry. The
Telephon.ini file looks for modem 0000.
Hope this helps someone else.
