Hello. I was wondering if it's possible to run host mode as a Win95
service. I'm connecting to a LAN, and I'd prefer to not have to
leave the PC that's running host mode logged in to a user's account.
By running as a service, it would startup prior to the network login
prompt. The documentation states that this is available for NT, but
I was wondering if there was some way to enable it for Win95.

Thank you.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for your post.

The feature you are looking for is the "Launch with Windows" option in
the Host icon's Properties, Settings screen.

This will allow the pcANYWHERE32 v8.0 Host to be waiting on the modem for
a connection. Once the Remote calls in, the first thing they would see
is the network login screen.

To work in concert with this, you might also want to check out the option
for security (same Settings screen) to "Logoff user" or "Restart host
computer".

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Thank you,

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. I did as you suggested, and pcAnywhere does start up with
the network login screen. However, I get a message saying that "A Telephony
device is temporarily unavailable..." and it asks me if I want to retry or
cancel. If I click on retry, it loads successfully. Is there a way I can set
this up so that it will always retry? If I'm rebooting this host remotely, it
won't answer the phone until pcA has successfully loaded, will it?

Thank you.

Tom,

Thanks for your reply. I followed this suggestion, and host mode
does start with the network login prompt. However, I get a message

saying that "A Telephony device is temporarily unavailable..." and it

asks me if I want to retry. Obviously, the modem will not answer
without manual intervention at this point. Is there a way to make it
retry until the device is available? What causes this message? What
else might be conflicting?

Thank you.

Hello Brian,

It seems that something else is using the modem when pcANYWHERE32 Host
asks the use of it from Windows 95.

Do you use DUN (DialUp Networking) or RAS (Remote Access Service) server
on that Host computer? If so, disable it and test the Host again.

Let me know what you find out.

Tom,

I'm not using any other "host" type services, such as RAS or DUN
server. Could it be the modem driver itself trying to load at the
same time as pcAnywhere?

Hello Brian,

Thank you for the reply post.

pcANYWHERE32 v8.0 Host (being 32-bit Windows compliant), send a call the
operating system to initialize the modem and have it (the modem) wait for
a call. At this point, Windows 95 is telling you that it can't access
the modem. The question becomes: what else is using the modem?

1) Edit your WIN.INI file in the (C:\Windows) folder and report what it
says in the 'LOAD=' and 'RUN=' lines.

2) What specific modem (manufacturer and model) are you using to wait
for a call on?

Please let me know.

Tom,

There is nothing being loaded in WIN.INI in the LOAD= or RUN= lines.
This is a Zoom 56K external voice modem, model 2949, I believe.

Thanks,

I believe what Tom was attempting to have you do was to clean boot the
computer, so we know that nothing else is loading. We want to ensure
the following to do this:

1. Nothing is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files.
2. No proprietary drivers are being loaded in the SYSTEM.INI. A good
way to check this is to search it for "C:\". This generally finds
directory paths for third party software.
3. Nothing is in the Startup Group.
4. Nothing is in the RUN keys of the registry.
5. Upon Windows' bootup, hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL should only show at the
most Explorer and SysTray. If anything else appears here, then end
task on it.

At this point, Windows is as clean as we can make it. Does the issue
occur then?
