I am trying to determine if my registry is "bloated" and whether a
complete HD reformat would be required. I have tried the following
and I understand this part of the exercise to restore the Registry
but I get "file not found": I’m using Norton Utilities Ver.3.0.7. in
Windows 98.
In DOS at C:\ prompt
CD WINDOWS [Enter]
ATTRIB SYSTEM.DAT -R -A -S -H [Enter]
ATTRIB USER.DAT -R -A -S -H [Enter]
Therefor I can not get to this point
CD WINDOWS [Enter]
MD OLDREG [Enter]
ATTRIB SYSTEM.DAT -R -A -S -H [Enter]
ATTRIB USER.DAT -R -A -S -H [Enter]
MOVE SYSTEM.DAT OLDREG [Enter]
MOVE USER.DAT OLDREG [Enter]
COPY SYSTEM.RSC SYSTEM.DAT [Enter]
COPY USER.RSC USER.DAT [Enter]
I understand Norton uses *.rsc as registry files
As of now my registry file size is as follows;
system.rsc 3.449 MB
user.rsc 0.609 MB
How do I backup and/or restore the registry. Can I or do I use Win 98
scanreg in a DOS prompt to restore a previous registry?

Ed,
Since you have Norton Utilities 3.0.7, the best thing to do is run
Optimization Wizard instead. It will compact your registry, and remove
any corruption.
If the attrib command is not working for you, you will need to contact
Microsoft, as that's a Microsoft program.
