Configuration Information:
Version: NU95 version 2.x
Operating system: Windows 95b

This appears to be a different problem than posted in the knowledge
base or in this newsgroup. When I have the Norton Registry Editor
look for orphan files, it will generate an "illegal operation" error
after finding 35 to 40 orphan files. The details tab shows the
following:
NREGEDIT caused an invalid page fault in module MFC40.DLL @
014f:5f80247f" after I close the window a second message pops up
that is similar except the page fault is at
"module MFC40.DLL @ 014f5f8012b6.

The second problem may be self inflicted. Thinking the problem above
is due to a problem with the registry editor or other utilities
files, I uninstalled Norton Utilities and reinstalled again. This
DID NOT fix the problem described above and now I get the "This beta
version of microsoft ActiveX has expired". I launched live update to
correct the problem as stated in the knowledge base but Live Update
says that I already have the most recent updates and the error
message still continues to come up.

Help!

Bob,

There are a couple of things going on here.

It's possible you have an updated MFC40.DLL that is not compatible
with Norton Utilities 2.0. That file is a standard Microsoft file that
many programs use, including Windows.

You can test to see if this is the case by renaming that file to
something like MFC40.OLD and putting the one from your Norton
Utilities CD in it's place.

If that problem goes away, then you know what the cause is. If another
program complains about MFC40.DLL, the best option at that point would
be to update Norton Utilities to version 3.0.

To fix this, download the file here:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/norton_utilities/ver2_win95/updates/live2.reg
and double click on it. You should get a message that information was
merged into the registry. Once that's done, run LiveUpdate again. It
will download the update and install it.

Let us know if there are any other questions we can help with.
