Normally, it's best to save everything, and then try and figure out
what you have. You can try opening the file in various programs
(Notepad, Wordpad, etc). Then, you know whether to save the file or
remove it from your system. What you were doing before the crash would
also indicate what type of file it may be. For Example, if you were
editing a Word document, then try opening the file in Word.

Should I always make an undo disk (an inconvenient step if not
necessary)?
We recommend it. At that point in the process, changes are being made
to your disk. Without an undo disk, if something is lost during the
fix process, only the undo disk would be able to put things back the
way they were.
