Configuration Information:
Version: 2.0

Win 95 was unable to load and kept rebooting, so I used the F8 key to
start from dos. At C:\ prompt it would just flash and I was unable to
do anything. I would type letters and nothing would show on the
screen. I thought it was a Win95 problem, so I formatted the hard
drive as I have in the past and tried to start over. Thats when I
found out I had a virus. It formatted fine and copied the
command.com, but when I started to load win95 ver. B it would copy 27
files then lock up. I did this 3 times, then the screen printed a
message backwards something about the stacks not being set rigth in
config sys. Then the screen to left corner said parity check. I did
have norton vers 3 on win95, but could not use that. I have an older
version 2.1 for dos and copied that in (it would not let me install
anything). I was able to run it and it said that I had a unknown
virus and that 11 files were currupt. My question would be can I get
a version upgrade for this old of a copy of Norton. If not what can I
do? I put the floppies that I was using into my laptop and cleaned
them with the Version 3 for win95.

Hello Scott,

Thanks for using the Online Support newsgroup for Norton AntiVirus.

NAV 2.1 for Windows 3.x was discontinued some time ago and we no longer provide
virus definitions updates for this version. We also haven't had a version 3.0
for the Windows 95 platform. The current version for Windows 95/98 is NAV 5.0.
If you'd like to try this version, it can be downloaded as trialware from our
web site,

http://www.symantec.com/nav/fs_nav5-95nt.html#trial

We also have a DOS-based scanner which is very useful for cleaning up viruses
that are found while installing our NAV trialware. This scanner, NAVC10.EXE,
may be downloaded from:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/norton_antivirus/ver3_w
in3x/scanner/

To use,

1. Create a directory called NAVC on your hard disk. You can do this by
clicking on "My Computer" then clicking on "c:" then going to the file menu
and finally selecting "new > folder". This will create a folder called "new
folder" and it will be highlighted. Rename this folder to "NAVC".

2. Copy NAVC10.EXE to the NAVC folder and then boot your system with a clean
boot disk.

3. Change to the NAVC folder and enter NAVC10 to expand the scan files.

4. To run the scan, enter NAVC C: /REPAIR

If you should have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to
ask.

Thanks for writing,

I had a mistake on the Version for win95 it is version 2. I have
ordered version 5 a couple of days ago, should I wait for that to get
here? Will it come on floppies or just CDRom? I tried to download the
Navc10.exe but could not link there.

Hi Scott,

Here's a better link to download the NAVC10.EXE scanner from:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/norton_antivirus/ver3_win3x/scanner/

My reader wrapped the URL, so unless you copied and pasted the address
into your browser, it would not have worked. Please try NAVC10 to
scan and repair.

Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Just want to say thanks the navc10 worked just as you said it would.
Also why do some programs want us to shut off the antivirus in order
to install them?

Hi Scott,

I'm very glad to hear that the program was successful for you. That's
good news :-)

Some programs require shutting down AV applications to reduce the
chances of false virus alerts during the installation. I haven't run
into any problems leaving Auto-Protect enabled (I usually forget to
disable it), so the problem may be overstated. When Windows 95 first
came out, we suggested that users End Task on everything except
Systray and Explorer. This is still helpful if you wish to ensure a
smooth installation or if you encounter problems with an install. An
alternative is to boot into Safe Mode before installing.

If you do disable Auto-Protect prior to an installation, it would be a
good idea to scan the CD or floppies with NAV, before starting the
setup program. This should catch any viruses that may be lurking in
the files on the CD before they have a chance to make it to your
harddrive.

Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Regards,
