My computer is supposed to do weekly scans every Friday night and
update every month on the 23rd. Does my computer have to be on or
can it be on suspend or standby?
Does Friday night mean the computer has to be on from 6pm to 6 am or
how long does it need to be on for the scan to happen?

It is necessary for a computer to remain running during the time you
set Scheduler to run some events automatically, otherwise Scheduler
will happily miss the event. You'll be better off to use System Agent
- if you have got it on your system. As to the Friday night - when
setting Scheduler you should have set it to run weekly on a given
hour; this hour can be easily changed.
