virus not detected on auto scan

I ran a manual scan last night & BackOrifice.Trojan was detected. My
auto scan is set for every Fri. it should have ran 2 times since the
date if the infected file..which was suppose to have been 8/13/98 if
I read the info correctly. why didn't it detect the Trojan then? Also
one of the files I had to remove was dlspeed..is this an important
file for my computer?..can/should it be replaced?..if so..how? I had
to use my Norton rescue disks to remove the Trojan..but those disks
had not been updated since the Norton program was installed..so is
the Trojan an old thing?..since Jan.98?
