Hello,
I recommend that you follow these steps to try and correct the
problem:
Auto-Protect is often configured to scan removable media devices for
boot sector viruses during WIN 95 shutdown. While scanning the boot
sector, Auto-Protect displays a text mode message that notes it is
currently scanning a boot record. Some video boards and video drivers
have problems switching to text mode after the WIN 95 shutdown screen
is displayed and may cause either a system lockup, a display
scramble, or a reboot.
You can control whether or not the text message is displayed by
merging the following Registry Entry files with your Registry:
APMSGOFF.REG Prevents the AP text message from displaying
APMSGON.REG Permits the AP text message to be displayed
To merge a Registry Entry file with your Registry, simply double
click the file from the Explorer or a My Computer window. Both files
are located where Norton AntiVirus is installed. By default, this is
the C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus folder.
In this case, you need to double click the APMSGOFF.REG file
in order to disable the shutdown DOS text message from
AutoProtect that may be causing a disruption.
If you receive an error double clicking this file, then copy it to a
directory that has 8 character or less as the name (e.g. c:\install).
You can create the directory if you want. Once you have copied
the APMSGOFF.REG to a different folder, double click it in it's new
location.
Note that if a virus is found, Auto-Protect will attempt to display a
message irrespective of this setting.
If the above does not help, then:
1) Open NAV by clicking Start->Programs->Norton Antivirus->Norton
Antivirus
2) Click on 'Options'
3) Click the 'Auto-Protect' tab
4) Look to see if Auto-Protect is set to scan 'All Files' or 'Program
Files'
5) If it is set to scan 'All Files', then change it to 'Program Files'
and click ok. Exit Nav and reboot. Test to see if the issue is
still occurring
Having NAV set to scan Program Files only does not degrade your
protection. A virus will only infect a program file, scanning other
files will not increase your protection.
If the problem still occurs on shutdown, then I suggest you download
our latest SYMEVNT drivers. You can download them at:
[<a
href="ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/symevnt/symevnt.exe">Symevnt
Drivers</a>]
a) Place the SYMEVNT.EXE file in a temporary directory and
execute it to expand the three SYMEVNT files.
b) Boot to DOS by choosing Start->Shut Down->Restart the
Computer in MS-DOS Mode.
c) Copy all three SYMEVNT files from the temporary folder to
your \Program Files\Symantec folder. For example, if you
expanded SYMEVNT.EXE in the C:\temp folder, your Program Files
folder is C:\Program Files, you would type:
copy c:\temp\s32evnt1.dll c:\progra~1\symantec <Enter>
copy c:\temp\symevnt.386 c:\progra~1\symantec <Enter>
copy c:\temp\symevnt1.dll c:\progra~1\symantec <Enter>
Answer yes when it asks you to overwrite the existing files.
If you are running a shared installation of Windows from a
network, these files need to go into the shared Windows directory on
the network.
d) Restart Windows--type Win or Exit, or hit Ctrl-Alt-Del.
Test to see if the problem persists.
I hope that this helps. If I can be of further assistance, please let
me know.
