Configuration Information:
Operating system: Windows 98
Network: --Other--

I am using ACT! 4.0.2 build 358 and Winfax 8.0.3 on WIndows 98.
Attaching faxes to contact records seems to work OK until I return to
the contact and double click on the fax attached icon to view the
fax. To my surprise, Microsoft Interent Explorer is spawned (I use
Netscape as my browser), and the following error message appears (to
no surprise):

"Navigation Canceled

Internet Explorer was unable to connect to the Web page you
requested because navigation was canceled. There are several reasons
why this might happen:You clicked the Stop button before the page
finished loading. You have chosen not to view secure content, or have
enabled ratings. The page might not be available at this time. Your
modem is not connected, and Internet Explorer did not find any
offline content to display. For more information about browsing
offline, click Unable to retrieve Web page in Offline mode.

Any ideas?

Thanks kindly.

Hello Ron,

I have not seen this problem before. I can't imagine what the
connection might be between the document and MSIE.

What does the icon look like in the notes/history tab? What is the
extension of the document you are opening?

Please let us know what steps you follow, especially what options you
choose when attaching the fax to the contact.

What happens if you open the file from Explorer rather than ACT!?

I'm sorry I have no ready answers for you. This is not something that
has come up before.

Let us know what you find out so we can work together to try and solve
the problem opening the attachment.

I am having the exact same problem as quoted below. Using the same
versions of Act and Winfax as noted, and Win95 OSR2, Internet
Explorer 4.0 (4.72.3110.8):

Specifically, if I tag a fax in Winfax to sent as an attachment to an
Act contact (by right-clicking on the fax in the listing, and
choosing Sent to an Act 4.0 Contact), the fax shows up in the
contact's history list, with a little fax icon, and with the correct
fax description, but double-clicking on it brings up Internet
Explorer, not the Winfax viewer. The file attachment is listed like
this (cut from my Act contact "Attachment" column:

WFXVIEWLOGENTRYID:FF46:0000000090CA020000000000C0000000000000460101219218000000030000000102030405060708111213141516171833060002

My uneducated guess is that this looks like an Internet Explorer file
to Windows 95. This is obviously not a Winfax file, and I assume
this is some sort of Registry association issue. But, this is one of
the main reasons I got Act, and obviously this has happened to more
than one person, so we need a solution.

Please help!

Thanks,
David Kafka

Further to my own message, reproduced partially below:

On further investigation, I have discovered that I always get the
exact same "attachment" listed no matter what fax I attach to what
contact. By experimenting a little, I find that if I manually
substitute the correct fax file (i.e. *.fx?) for the information in
the record, then it works as expected, but the little icon changes
from the word "fax" to the Winfax viewer "eye" icon. It would appear
that the Winfax link is sending the wrong information to Act.

Hi Patti,

I've been on travel or I would have responded sooner...

Thanks for the additional information, David.

Our problems have identical symptoms. I attached a Winfax sent
message with the pull-down command (ctrl-I) and the appropriate
Winfax Eye Icon appeared and the correct filename, and double
clicking spawned the Winfax viewer nicely.

My attached files names are apparently the same incorrect ones that
you have,such as my:
(WFXVIEWLOGENTRYID:FF46:0000000090CA020000000000C00000000000004601012
192180000000300000001020304050607081112131415161718C3010002), And,
just as you discovered, when Winfax automatically attaches the fax
after sending, the icon is not the Winfax Eye but rather a small
yellow icon with the word FAX on it. (It also has the small black on
white arrow in the lower left corner I've always associated with
shortcuts.

Hope this helps all of us.

Ron,

I have now discovered that the same problem occurs if I send a fax
from Act. The history contains the same misdirected attachment. I
also discovered that pointing to a Winfax file does not solve the
problem for multipage faxes (well, at least the message I used does
not include both the fax and the cover page.) With the information
we've provided, it seems to me Symantec ought to be able to track
this down. We can't be the only two people who have this identical
problem.

Thanks for responding.

Hi David and Ron,

Please let me know what steps you follow when MSIE opens rather than
the WinFax viewer. Include how you get the document to the
notes/history tab.

This problem has been reproduced and appears to be related to Outlook
Express. So you have Outlook Express installed on your machine?

Please let us know what version of ACT!, MSIE, WinFax and Windows you
are using. We also would like to know how the document was created and
attached to the ACT! contact (is it a sent fax from a WinFax Pro log
or one you sent via ACT).

The additional information will help us track down the problem, which
should lead us to a solution.

Thank you for your persistence and patience.

Patti,

Thanks for replying. I believe Outlook Express came installed on my
machine. I am not sure it is still installed, but I also have
Outlook 98 installed, not that I use it. I will investigate those
issues and report back.

Meanwhile: The problem occurs no matter how the attachment gets into
Act. It happens if I send a fax from Act, when Act offers to attach
the fax, or if I use the pulldown menu in Winfax to attach the
document. Once it's attached, double-clicking on the Fax icon to the
left of the attachment in the Notes/History Tab for the contact
starts up IE on a blank page (or a site not found page).

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Using Explorer look for an Outlook Express folder. If you find one
delete it.

Let us know the results.
