I am on Windows 98 and am trying to import my notes from my ACT
database into Outlook.
I have successfully exported the majority of fields into Outlook.
However, I do not know how to transfer over the notes for each
contact in my database.
I have spoken with Outlook and they walked me through the steps on
how to map the custom fields. On the Outlook side there was a notes
section, but there was not a notes section in the mapping field on
the ACT side. I was told that I needed that on the ACT side for
outlook to know where the notes were coming from.
How do I solve this? Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Bob,
ACT! 4.0 stores notes as a memo text field in the file with the
extension BLB (Binary Large Object). It is not treated in the same
manner as a custom field. I do not understand the issues surrounding
the coding but I am informed it can not be setup to be pulled like the
other fields used in mapping to Outlook98.
The only option I have found at this point is to copy and paste my
notes into Outlook on a contact by contact basis. It is arduous and
time consuming, but I have found no other alternative at this time.
Let us know if we can be of further help.

This can't be done directly since Act stores notes in a separate dBase file
from contact information. Act handles the relationships between these tables
itself.
The only elegant way I have found of doing this is to write something using
the Act SDK available on Symantec's website.

Apologies if this gets posted twice - dejanews hung the first time...
Act stores different items in different database files and manages the
relationships internally. The files are in dBase format but Act only exports
the Contacts database when exporting as text.
The only elegant way I've found to export the notes is to download the Act
SDK from Symantec's web site and write something to do the export. Once
that's done you can import all the notes into any other database or contact
manager.
If you need any more info email me at the address below (you'll need to edit
the address).
