We have a database of over 6000 contacts. Within that database we
have created several different groups. One group in particular,
which we use frequently, used to contain 1300 contacts. Yesterday,
when I opened ACT, only 700 were in the group usually containing
1300. The whole database was not reduced in size, so the contacts
missing in the group are still in the database, just not in the
group.

There is another group in this same database which we also use fairly
often. It used to contain 250 contacts. Now, when I try to open
that group, nothing happens, making it seem as if all 6000 contacts
are the the group which is supposed to contain 250.

Hello Mark,

It sounds as if the database is damaged. There is a knowledge base
article that covers this in detail in the ACT! Knowledge Base. You
can use the link that I have placed below in order to open this
article.
