Brett:
Does anyone have experience (good, bad or indifferent) using the PC
link feature of a SHARP fax w/ WINFAX PRO 4.0? Was there any trick to
making it work?
Thanks for the prompt response. I hope you can be of help as repeated
converstations w/ SHARP customer service insists that the problem is
software incompatibility.

Do you know what class the Sharp fax machine is? Are you receiving
any error messages? Could you please give a more detailed
exploitation of what is happening.
Thanks for your continued interest. I'm not sure how to define
"class" It's a simple, 9600 baud, thermal fax. It claims to be able
to "talk" directly to a PC modem if a telephone line is connected
directly from its EXT jack to the PC modem LINE INPUT. The way it
should work is to set the fax to PC mode, put the paper to be SCANNED
in the fax, initiate MANUAL RECEIVE in WINFAX and when the modem
takes the line OFF THE HOOK, push START scan on the FAX.
Theoretically, this should initiate a HANDSHAKE between the FAX and
the PC, but nothing happens and after a few seconds, WINFAX times
out, releases the line and the FAX clicks a couple of time in
reaction to the line being released.
I get no error messages. Interestingly, if I change the hookup and
connect the modem to the same telephone line in parallel, I can SEND
to the modem if I dial a dummy number from the FAX....so they can
communicate.
The SHARP customer service rep insists that the FAX would work
properly if I had software he calls Delrina's HYDRALITE. Ever hear of
it???
John
Thanks again. Will go through the excercise you suggest but I have
had months of trouble free operation in receiveing and transmitting
fax's w/ this modem. I think I will abandon the cause and revert to
brute force to interface the two.

Please go through the following to see if Windows can see the Sharp
machine:
You should have a program called Terminal I believe that it is in the
Accessories group. Open Terminal and go into the Settings menu. Then
click on Communications. Select the Com Port that your modem is
installed on, Click Ok. You should now have a big white area in front
of you. In this white area type in ATZ (you may not actually see ATZ)
you should see a return of OK. Next type in AT+FCLASS=1 this sets the
fax/modem in fax mode. Next, we are going to dial a number. Type in
ATDT followed by the number i.e. ATDT123456789. If there is no
ringing or you receive some other error like No Dial Tone or No
Carrier then there is probably a problem with the modem.
Sincerely,
