to
Axel,

Please go through the following steps to try and resolve your issue.

1. Check for temp files.

Windows and many Windows applications create temporary files.
Sometimes these temporary files can become damaged or they are not
deleted when they should be. This often occurs if you reboot or turn
off your computer without properly exiting Windows. To ensure damaged
or unnecessary temporary files do not become a problem, you should
routinely delete temporary files.

- Close Windows if it is running. At the DOS prompt, type:

SET ...and press ENTER.

Note the subdirectory identified in the TEMP= line. Go to that
subdirectory and delete all temporary files.

- At the DOS prompt, type:

DEL *.TMP ...and press ENTER.

- If the TEMP= line is not set, delete all temporary files in your
WINDOWS and WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectories.

2. Run CHKDSK or SCANDISK to check for file corruption.
- If you have DOS 6.0 or lower, exit Windows and type CHKDSK /F at
the DOS
prompt from your root directory.
- If you have DOS version 6.2, run SCANDISK and do a complete surface
scan.
To do this, exit Windows and type CD\. Then type SCANDISK at the DOS
prompt.

Note: Before using these utilities, please consult your DOS User's
Guide.

3. Disable any screen savers or memory resident anti-virus programs.

These programs can conflict with WinFax. Anti-Virus programs are
usually started in the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and WIN.INI files.
Before making any changes to any file, be sure to create a backup copy
of the file.

- Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files by typing REM in front of
any
lines that could load an anti-virus program. Examples of these files
are NAV (Norton Anti-Virus) and PC Tools.
- In the WIN.INI file, look on the LOAD= and RUN= lines and disable
any
files that relate to screen savers, antivirus programs or Quicken
Billminder by typing REM or a semi-colon (;) at the beginning of the
line.
- You can also disable standard Windows screen savers from the Desktop
icon
in the Windows Control Panel.

Note: The After Dark and Intermission screen savers will not
interfere
with WinFax if you disable their IRQ monitoring option. See Technical
Note #2030 for more information on screen savers.

4. Eliminate any other memory resident programs.

Some files are automatically loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files. Before making any changes to either file, be sure
to create a backup copy of the file.

- To edit these files in DOS, type:

CD \
EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT or EDIT CONFIG.SYS

- To edit these files in Windows, run SYSEDIT from the Windows
Accessories
group. It automatically opens SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT. Select the file you want to edit and look for programs
that load into memory. Type REM or a semi-colon (;) at the beginning
of any lines that load a memory resident program.

5. Check Windows Swap File.

Check to make sure that you have created a permanent Windows swap
file. - In the Windows Control Panel, choose the 386 Enhanced icon.
- Click on Virtual Memory and this will show you the setting for your
swap
file. Make sure the file is at least 5000 KB in size, Permanent and on
an uncompressed drive.

If the 386-Enhanced icon is not present in the Windows Control Panel,
this indicates that you are running Windows in STANDARD mode and do
not have access to Virtual Memory in Windows. Windows programs
operate more efficiently when Virtual Memory is available, as does
WinFax.

Note: The OCR feature in WinFax will not run unless you are running
Windows
in Enhanced mode with a correct Permanent SWAP file setup.

6. Run DELTEST.EXE (available with WinFax PRO 4.0).

Run the Delrina TEST Utility. Double click the Delrina TEST icon in
the WinFax group. Run all modem, system and settings tests. The
utility will generate DELTEST.LOG, containing all test results, which
you can print or fax.

7. Set Your Transmission Speed

a. From the Setup menu, choose Fax/Modem. The Fax/Modem Setup dialog
appears.

b. In the Maximum Transmit Rate field select Fast As Possible. In
the Minimum Transmit Rate field select 2400 bps.

c. Click OK.

8. If you are using Windows for WorkGroups please ensure that the
comm driver you are using is from Microsoft. In your System.ini file
under the [Boot] section please ensure that the line Comm.drv= is
"Comm.drv=Comm.drv". If you are not using Windows for WorkGroups
comm.drv should = "WFXCOMM.DRV".

9. Try turning off Error Correction Mode.

In the Setup menu select Fax/Modem. There are two lines Use ECM for
Fax Reception/BFT and Use ECM for Fax Sending. Make sure that neither
of these options have an X in the box before them. Next, there are
two lines in the [General] section of the WinFax.ini file that you
should edit. ECMFaxSend= and ECM=, both of these lines should =0.

If the problem persists please send me the following information:

What modem are you using and what model? What is the error message
you are receiving? What version of Windows are you running and if
3.11 is it Workgroups? What processor are you running? How much RAM
do you have? What size Swap file do you have set up? Please post the
results of your Delrina Test (DelTest.exe) in the News Group.

Sincerely,

Brett Simpson [Symantec Corp.]
