A year ago my computer crashed. A data retrieval place saved my data.
However, my intricate system of send/receive folders and subfolders,
with their respective faxes, was not reconstructed. The faxes are all
on the hard drive though because I see them there with there digital
names.
What I need is an extremely detailed, step-by-step procedure to
restore all of this in my WinFax 4.0 program. I use Windows 3.1.
The help mentioned up top that I received a year ago was lengthy and
detailed.
I have tried to ask for help here in this forum since then but have
gotten only short answers that were of no help.
Could a senior, experienced WinFax person please solve this for me?
I need access to all my faxes, and in there original places I
created.
Thank you.
Greg
Please try the following:
In the [WinFax] section of the WIN.INI file, please ensure that the
line Fax Path = is pointing to the directory that contains the LOG.DB
and STATUS.FTM files. If the paths are correct try renaming the
LOG.DB file with the extension .OLD.

Dear Brett:
Thank you very much! It worked! My original intricate send/receive
folders were in the c:\winfax,
directory.
Now. Just one small problem has arisen out of your nifty solution. I
discovered that WinFax 4.0 has
done an interesting thing. Two times since 1996, Winfax has created
two additional directories with
the files, log.db and status.ftm. Let me explain.
I discovered when implementing your solution that there are actually
3, status.ftm files, and there
are 3, log.db files, each in its own directory, created by Winfax.
Some must have the older data,
and others have the data since the crash.
Winfax has my original intricate send/receive folders and their faxes
in the c:\winfax, directory.
There is also a directory named c:\winfax\old, that has a small
amount of data. And then there is
the c:\winfax\data, directory that has been the one in use since the
crash. Each of these directories
have a status.ftm and a log.db file.
Brett, you must know my next question. How do I incorporate all three
status.ftm files and all three
log.db files into one status.ftm file and one log.db file that
contain all the send/receive folder data
and all their faxes, and the phone books' data, in their appropriate
places? All of this smooth and
seamless in its final appearance when I start Winfax.
Thanks a lot.
You are my guru if you can do this and make it as simple for me as
you did the solution to my first problem.
:-)
You cannot combine the three folders into one. However, what you can
do is bring each of the old logs into an archive folder. What you
want to do is to set the WIN.INI to look at the first old data
directory. Create a new folder in WinFax. Go into the Log
Administrator, the screen where you see the logs, right mouse click on
New Folder and select New. Create a folder to move your sent and
received events from the send and receive logs. You may want to
create two folders one for sent events and one for received events.
When you create the folder you will be asked for a file name and path.
I would suggest that you use the path to the data directory you are
going to be using, the new data directory. When you have created the
Archive Folder you can now move all of the events into that folder.
Highlight all of the events you would like to move into that folder
and then Drag n' Drop them into the new folder. You will do the same
thing for the other old logs. You can try using the same folder for
both old directories and that way you would have them all in one
folder. I have not tried this but it should work. When you have
created the folder(s) for all of the old events you can then bring
them into the current or new log. Change the WIN.INI back to point to
the new data directory and create a new folder in the same manner as
you have for the Archive Folders. When asked for a file name specify
the file you created for the old events or one of the files if you
have created more than one folder. Do this for each folder you have
created. Although the events will not be in the Send and Receive logs
you will have access to the old events.
Hope this is understandable and that it helps. Please let me know if
it is unclear or if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
