Marlin,

THANKS for your help on our problem with WinFaxPro V4.0. As you will
recall, we are running on a 486/66, 16MB,Win 3.11, and have some 4708
faxes in \DATA (253+MB).

I was finally able to successfully reinstall WFP, after carefully
sanitizing the system. I first renamed \WINFAX to \OLDFAX, thus
preserving the 250+MB DATA info, avoiding a 5hr LapLinkPro copy. The
new prg worked just fine, in \WINFAX. So, to try to get the old data
back, I then copied the \WINFAX files to \OLDFAX (first deleting the
contents of it), renamed \WINFAX to \NEWFAX, and \OLDFAX to \WINFAX,
to use the old phonebooks and fax index. When I started it up, got
the wait-icon, it sat awhile and nothing, as before.

So, I believe Bill has exceeded the capacity of the program with 4708
files. Have you tested V4.0 to this extent?

And, the bigger question, if we upgraded to the newest ver for Win95
and installed Win95, would that ver handle 4700+ files? Or is there
some way to subdivide the 4700 into smaller Windows subdirectories?
Bill has some file-folders in WFP with faxes, can these be physically
moved out of the directory (IN WFP, not DOS/Win), so it does not
exceed the limits?

Please verify that the fax index cannot be recreated or
reconstructed. Could Bill move the received faxes out to a new
logical directory? Or is there some way to get into WFP currently,
and delete selected faxes? His sent faxes are critical to him!

Any suggestions you have would be most appreciated, as Bill is
tearing out his hair and going crazy, as he relies on this program
for much of his business. As you can tell, this is quite urgent for
Bill.

Many Thanks!

Rich, for Bill Neufeld

No, Winfax 4 is a sunset product and only supported here in the
newsgroups. We will be doing no further testing on it. We are going
forwards with other versions. Winfax 7, 7.5, 8 + have since replaced
it.

I belive you missed a step in renaming your data directory. What
happen to the \data and \cover sections of that directory?

Restore backed up data from your previous installation of WinFax PRO
(optional)

Restoring attachments

In Windows, maximize the Main group.
Double click the File Manager icon. File Manager opens.
Open the BAKWFX\DATA directory.
Copy ATTACH.DAT and all files with the extension .FX? to your new
WINFAX\DATA directory, where ? is the last letter of the file
extension.

NOTE:
WinFax should automatically recognize your attachments. If WinFax
cannot recognize the attachments it is likely that the ATTACH.DAT file
is corrupted or missing. In this case it will be necessary to add the
attachments using New in the Attachments window.

Restoring logs

In Windows, maximize the Main group.
Double click the File Manager icon. File Manager opens.
Open the BAKWFX\DATA directory.
Copy all files with the extension .FTM to the new WINFAX\DATA
directory.
In WinFax, select New Folder when the Log window is open.
Click Log / Select to choose the *.FTM file you require.
Repeat step 6 for each additional log you wish to import.

Recovering phonebooks

In Windows, maximize the Main group.
Double click the File Manager icon. File Manager opens.
Open the BAKWFX\DATA directory.
Copy all files with the extension .DBF to the new WINFAX\DATA
directory.
In WinFax, select New Folder when the Phonebook window is open.
Click Import to choose the .DBF file you wish to import.
Repeat step 6 for each additional phonebook you wish to import.

Restoring cover pages

In Windows, maximize the Main group.
Double click the File Manager icon. File Manager opens.
Open the BAKWFX\COVER directory.
Copy all files with the extension .CVP to the new WINFAX\COVER
directory.
In WinFax, select New Folder when the Cover Page window is open.
Click Select to choose the cover page file you wish to import.
Repeat step 6 for each additional cover page you wish to import.

Winfax, any version has only the limitation of your computers'
resources.

No, Winfax only recognizes the files /faxes in c:\winfax\data. You
may move them, but you would not be able to "move" them back without
loosing your existing logs? However, in Winfax 8+ we have message
stores that allow you to backup faxes you no longer wish to reside on
the HD, but would still like toview later.
