Subject: Sanitization Procedure for WinFax
Use this procedure to remove all files and references relating to
previous
versions of WinFax from your system, prior to your installation of
WinFax
PRO 4.0.
Note: These procedures work for all versions up to and including
WinFax PRO
4.0, except the French market version, marketed as 'DelFax PRO'.
STEP ONE - LOCATE THE INSTALLATION
==================================
Search the drive for WinFax, if you are not sure of its location, or
if you
possibly have multiple installations. To search for WinFax, type the
following at the DOS prompt from the root directory of your hard drive
(for
example, C:\>> ):
DIR FAXMNG.EXE /S
Try this on each hard drive partition (C:, D: etc..). If found, the
directory where WinFax is located will be reported.
STEP TWO - SAVE YOUR DATA FILES
===============================
WinFax PRO 3.0, WinFax PRO 3.0 for Networks, WinFax PRO 4.0
-----------------------------------------------------------
If you have a previous installation of WinFax PRO 3.0, WinFax PRO 3.0
for
Networks or WinFax PRO 4.0, back up all files in the WinFax
directories. For
example:
C:\WINFAX\OLD\
C:\WINFAX\DATA\
C:\WINFAX\COVER\
C:\WINFAX\MACROS\
Use the following commands, with the appropriate directories
substituted if
your WinFax directories differ from the ones listed:
MD C:\BAKWFX
MD C:\BAKWFX\OLD
MD C:\BAKWFX\DATA
MD C:\BAKWFX\COVER
MD C:\BAKWFX\MACROS
COPY C:\WINFAX\OLD\*.* C:\BAKWFX\OLD
COPY C:\WINFAX\DATA\*.* C:\BAKWFX\DATA
COPY C:\WINFAX\COVER\*.* C:\BAKWFX\COVER
COPY C:\WINFAX\MACROS\*.* C:\BAKWFX\MACROS
STEP THREE - REMOVE THE DIRECTORIES
===================================
Delete the WinFax directories. For example:
C:\WINFAX

Use the following commands, with the appropriate directories
substituted if
your WinFax directories differ from the ones listed:
DEL C:\WINFAX\*.*
DEL C:\WINFAX\OLD\*.*
DEL C:\WINFAX\DATA\*.*
DEL C:\WINFAX\COVER\*.*
RD C:\WINFAX\OLD
RD C:\WINFAX\DATA
RD C:\WINFAX\COVER
RD C:\WINFAX
STEP FOUR - REMOVE DELRINA FAX PRODUCT FILES FROM WINDOWS INSTALLATION
======================================================================
Delete the following files from your WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory. Use
the
following commands, with the appropriate directories substituted if
your
Windows directories differ from the ones listed:
DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WINFAX.DRV
DEL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WFXCTL.DLL
Leave the following WinFax file in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.
This
file should not be deleted in case it is referenced in the SYSTEM.INI
file.
(It will not affect a re-installation if it is present). For example:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WFXCOMM.DRV
Delete the following files from your WINDOWS directory. Use the
following
commands, with the appropriate directories substituted if your Windows
directory differ from the one listed:
DEL C:\WINDOWS\TWAIN.DLL
DEL C:\WINDOWS\FAXMNG.EXE
DEL C:\WINDOWS\MOD.EXE
DEL C:\WINDOWS\VIEWER.DLL
DEL C:\WINDOWS\RXDLL.DLL

DEL C:\WINDOWS\WINFAX.GRP
DEL C:\WINDOWS\WINFAX.INI
DEL C:\WINDOWS\WFCOVER.DLL
DEL C:\WINDOWS\WFVIEW.DLL
DEL C:\WINDOWS\WFX*.*
You may not find all of the files listed above.
STEP FIVE - REMOVE DELRINA FAX PRODUCT WIN.INI REFERENCES
=========================================================
Use Windows SYSEDIT to edit your WIN.INI file. Double click the
SYSEDIT icon
in the Windows Accessories group or choose Run from the File menu and
type
SYSEDIT.EXE at the command line. This program will automatically
create a
backup copy of your original WIN.INI file (called WIN.SYD) in case you
make
a mistake.
Completely remove the following sections from your WIN.INI file:
[WINFAX]
[ANYFAX]
[WFXPBLINKS]
Remove the following statements from the [Devices] section of your
WIN.INI
file:

STEP SIX - DELETE THE WINFAX ICONS AND PROGRAM GROUP
====================================================
From Windows Program Manager:
- Select an icon from the WinFax program group and press the delete
key.
- Repeat for all of the WinFax icons.
- Minimize the WinFax program group and press the delete key.
STEP SEVEN - Re-install WinFax Pro 4.0
STEP EIGHT - RETRIEVING BACKED UP DATA FROM WinFax PRO 4.0, AFTER
REMOVING
PREVIOUS VERSION OF WinFax
==========================================================================
Location of Backed Up Data
------------------------------------------------------------
| Data Type | WinFax 2.0 family | WinFax 3.0/4.0 family |
|----------------------------------------------------------|
| Attachments | C:\BAKWFX2 | C:\BAKWFX\DATA |
| Logs | C:\BAKWFX2 | C:\BAKWFX\DATA |
| Phonebooks | C:\BAKWFX2 | C:\BAKWFX\DATA |
| Cover Pages | n/a | C:\BAKWFX\COVER |
------------------------------------------------------------
Attachments
-----------
To access Attachments after installation, copy ATTACH.DB and the *.FX*
files to your new WINFAX\DATA directory from the appropriate directory
listed above. They should be automatically recognized. If they can not
be
accessed it is likely that the ATTACH.DB file is corrupted, or
missing. In
that case, add the attachments using New Attachment in the Attachments
window.
Logs
----
To access logs, copy the *.FTM files to the WINFAX\DATA directory from
the
appropriate directory listed above. Select New Folder from the log
window
and use Select from the New Archive Folder dialog to choose the *.FTM
file
you require.
Phonebooks
----------
To recover Phonebooks, copy all the DBF files to the WINFAX\DATA sub
directory from the appropriate directory above. Select an existing
phonebook
and choose the Import option from the right click menu. From the
Import
Phone Records dialog, select the appropriate type of format (such as
dBase
III/IV). If this file is corrupt and it was originally a WinFax Lite
or 2.0
phone book, copy the PBK file and import it, again selecting the
appropriate
type of format.
Cover Pages
-----------
To restore cover pages, copy the *.CVP files to the WINFAX\COVER
directory
from the appropriate directory above. Create a new cover page folder
or
select an existing folder to store the recovered pages. Select New
Cover
Page from the cover pages window and use Select from the New Cover
Page
dialog to choose the *.CVP file you require.
Please go through the following when installing WinFax PRO 4.0 under
Windows 95:
Although WinFax PRO 4.0 will normally install and run under Windows
95, it was originally designed for Windows 3.x and there is no
guarantee of forward compatibility. There is no WinFax PRO 4.0 patch
available for Windows 95.
There are some restrictions on using certain modules in WinFax. If you
installed WinFax PRO 4.0 before upgrading to Windows 95, it is
recommended that you re-install it. If you installed MS Office 7.0,
then re-install of WinFax after installing MS Office.
First Installation Under Windows 95
1. Insert the setup-disk in the floppy-drive or CD drive and click on
the START button. You can install from the RUN menu or from
SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL/ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS. Ignore the first setup
window asking for PROGMAN.EXE by clicking on CONTINUE.
2. In the installation window, select CUSTOM INSTALL. Do NOT install
the macros. They are incompatible with 32 bit applications under
Windows 95. Deselect the Application-Macros when you are using
WIN95-applications (ie.MS Office 7.0), because the macro language has
changed in the new applications and all existing macros can NOT be
used.
Do NOT install in directories with long names! It is strongly
recommended, that you install in the default locations.
Let the install test the COM-ports. WinFax can only install on
COM-ports 1-4.
If your 28.8 modem does not appear in the modem list, select a
similar 14,400 model (faxing is limited to 14.400 bps) or select a
generic modem.
Bypass the window requesting for changes in SYSTEM.INI by clicking on
NO.
Do NOT install WFXCOMM.DRV. Windows 95 must use its own driver named
COMM.DRV.
In User|Setup, fill in at least your CSID. Use only numbers. It is
illegal to use a fax modem without CSID in some countries. Also, some
fax-machines will interrupt connections to devices without a CSID.
After the install, edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT and add the WinFax path to
the existing path-statement. The path could appear as follows:
PATH=C:\;C:\WINFAX; (assuming you have installed in C:\WINFAX). Edit
only with an ASCII-editor, ie. Notepad, or use the system-editor.
After setting the path, restart your computer, so the settings can
take effect.
If you have a DCSETUP failure: See below in "Error-Handling".
Re-Installing WinFax PRO 4.0 Under Windows 95
Proceed as above (Install). Install to the same location as the
existing WinFax installation. Your existing phonebook, logs,
attachments and cover-pages are NOT overwritten on re-installing.
If you have a DCSETUP failure, refer to "Error-Handling" below.
Using WinFax PRO 4.0 in Windows 95
You must include WinFax in the path statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Disable background spooling for the WinFax printer: In Control Panel
double click on the printer icon, right click on the WinFax printer
and select PROPERTIES. In Properties, click on the DETAILS, <Tab>,
then on the SPOOL SETTINGS button: Select "Print directly to the
printer" and click on OK.
To print to WinFax from any Windows-application, start WinFax
(minimized) and then start the application you will be faxing from.
Before printing to WinFax you have to set WinFax as the default
printer. You can do this on clicking FILE (main bar) and PRINTER
SETTING... If you are using an application without the menu-item
PRINTER SETTING, then you must set the printer in Control Panel. Do
not forget to set the printer back to your local printer, if you want
print anything on paper.
Never use long filenames to save attachments or cover-pages. This
applies to all 16 bit applications running under Windows 95.
Error-Handling
Error: DCSETUP caused a segment not present fault...
1. If you have a Logitech mouse installed on your system, disable the
Logitech driver during the installation:
In Control Panel click twice on the mouse icon.
Select the GENERAL tab and click on the CHANGE.... button.
Mark SHOW ALL DEVICES and wait for the list.
Mark [Standard mouse types] and mark Standard PS/2 Port Mouse.
Click on OK and wait until you see the new driver, then click on
close.
The computer must be restarted to take effect.
Now install WinFax as above.
After installing, you may revert back to the old Logitech settings. If
you don't change back and you have a three-button mouse, the middle
button will no longer work.
Installation failure on testing the COM-port
WinFax can only use COM 1-4. Windows 95 can install PnP modems on any
port above the last standard COM-port 4. It does this when other
hardware (ie. Souncards, CD-ROMs) uses interrupts and/or addresses
that would normally be assigned to COM 1-4.. In this case, disable (or
pull out of the computer) all other hardware and reinstall your PnP
modem. Reinstall the other hardware in WIN95.
If the Deltest fails on your modem on COM 1-4, it is possible that
your modem is not compatible with WinFax. Contact the modem
manufacturer.
Your modem does not appear in the modem list
First check your modem manual to find an initialization string for
WinFax.
If you find the same make and a model 14.400 bps in the modem list,
use this initialization string. If all fails, contact technical
support.
Failure when clicking on the ATTACH button in the Send screen
It is possible that you might run into problems using your attachments
after upgrading to Windows 95. If you encounter an error going to
attachments, proceed as follows:
Close WinFax and rename the file ATTACH.DB to ATTACH.OLD in the
WINFAX directory
Restart WinFax
Existing attachments will not be listed, so you have to add these
attachments.
In some instances, this problem will happen again after WinFax has
been closed down and reopened. In this case re-installing Windows 95
might correct the problem.
Failure while recognizing with OCR
If you have problems recognizing long documents, split up the
operation by selecting pages 1-10 (first run), page 11-20 (second run)
etc. Depending on your system, you might have to select fewer pages.
If there is a failure while recognizing, you might not be able to exit
WinFax. In this case you will have to restart Windows 95.
ATM fonts
According to the Windows 95 README file, PROGRAMS.TXT in the WINDOWS
directory, ATM fonts cannot be used in most fax applications.
Corrupted logs and/or re-installation on other locations
If you re-installed WinFax to a different location (drive/directory)
and/or you can't see your existing events, the file LOG.DB (data
directory) is still pointing to the old location or the file is
corrupt. Rename this file (out of WinFax) to LOG.OLD and restart
WinFax. The file is rebuilt and you should see the old events. The
log-list itself is stored in the file STATUS.FTM. If this file is
corrupted (you can rename it too) it is impossible to rebuild your
existing log.
The same is true for your phonebook: PHONE.DB points to the
phonebooks.
The phonebook itself is stored in DEFAULT.DBF or other DBF files if
you have added other phonebooks.
Refer to other Technical notes covering this topic in the
Knowledgebase if you have further problems.
Cover Page Designer
There are known issues with the Cover Page Designer under Windows 95.
The following change should be made in the WINFAX.INI file under the
WINFAX section:
;Cover Fonts=normal (insert a semicolon at the beginning of the line
to disable it)
When using the Designer Viewer, the fonts might appear garbled and go
off at angles. It can be extremely difficult to determine what the
fonts are from looking at the display. Should you experience this,
the cover page can be viewed as follows:
Initiate a send
Select the cover page in question
Select Schedule|Hold in the send screen. (This will stop the event in
the Outbox)
Send the cover page.
Click Outbox on the toolbar
Double click the event to bring it into the viewer.
What is displayed here is what will be sent. It might be necessary to
redesign the cover pages that cause problems.
Sincerely,
Brett Simpson [Symantec Corp.]
