Read Sector failure

while, successfully making backup images to a partition on an internal
secondary hard drive (D:\). Recently, I got an external USB hard drive
(WD 500 GB) and also installed Acronis True Image Home 11. ATI
successfully made images to the external drive (G:\). (And ATI
successfully made an image to G:\ *after* this Ghost crashing began!)
Just for the heck of it, I tried to make a Ghost image to a directory on
the external drive (G:\Ghost Images). As I stepped through the process,
Ghost recognized the external drive and warned me to select the USB
drivers in Advanced Options. Following the directions, I selected the
USB 1.1 option because this pc has both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports (the
external drive is connected to a USB 2.0 port).
Ghost rebooted and crashed in PC-DOS.
I've tried selecting the USB 2 drivers (crashed; didn't even find the
external drive) and then tried directing Ghost to the previously-fine
option of using internal drive D:\. This also crashed.
When attempting to create an image on the internal drive (D:\) no USB
drivers are loaded and the failure error message is "Error Number:
(29004) Read sector failure, result = 1, drive = 2, sectors 6291519 to
6291521". I'm not sure which drive is "drive = 2".

There are 3 physical drives involved. The first drive contains one 75
GB NTFS partition, C:\ (this is the disk being imaged). The second
drive has 2 NTFS partitions, D:\ (93 GB) and E:\ (50 GB) and about 42 GB
unallocated space. The third drive (USB external) has one 465 GB NTFS
partition, G:\
I've done a chkdsk /F on all of the partitions (C, D, E, and G). There
were some minor errors on C and E that were fixed.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Ghost 2003. No help.
I *think* the problem may be that the USB drivers supplied by Ghost 2003
aren't properly recognizing the external drive. But the problem happens
even if I tell Ghost to use the internal drive. How can I get Ghost to
ignore the external drive (it had to be "activated" or something similar
before the first try). Or is something else entirely going on?
