Currently using Mac OS 7.5 and I would like to upgrade to 7.6. Is there a
single upgrade to 7.6 or must I upgrade in increments ie: 7.5.2 etc.

All of Apple's full-number or one-point (adding 0.x to a version) can be
bought shrinkwrap (and none of them are really "upgrades" either, they're
just the full this with a $30 rebate if you can show proof of ownership of
the previous version). So to answer your question shortly, yes. Though I
don't know if they still sell 7.6; why not get 8.1 (or better, wait a few
weeks for 8.5)? Older machine, not supported? I wonder if Apple would
still sell older versions of the OS (of give them away for free) to
customers with machine not supported in newer versions.

I believe that for just that reason they do. Also, for very old machines,
the system software is freely available. I think anything before System 7.5
is available for free, and then 7.6 and 8.1 should be the current items for
sale from Apple. This saved my bacon in building my $6 Mac Plus (woo hoo!
two weeks ago I scavenged a 20 Mb HD).

You just upgrade to 7.6. Its a complete installer. But why? System 8.1 is
soooooooo much better, so much more stable than is 7.6. Wait a week and
you will be able to upgarde to 8.5, and beleive me. the wait will be worth it!

You just do it in a single step. Several pieces of advice, though:

1. There's a great utility called "Clean-Install Assistant". Do a web
search and download it. It's free.
Basically, it removes all the non-Apple stuff from your system folder.
You then do a clean installation and run CI Assistant again to put
everything back. You have a clean installation and all your application
extensions and settings restored in about 15 minutes.

2. Be sure to update the hard disk drivers. That's one of the options in
the installer.

3. If you have a 68040 or especially if you have a PPC, consider Mac OS
8.1. It's faster on PPC and has some added features. Stability is improved
on some systems, as well.

Good luck.

George:

Am I wrong to believe that 8.5 is PPC only? Header from message you

Is possible this poster has a machine like an LC series, VX, or 68030
equipped unit that will only accept 7.6.1.
