John-
I am in the position of having bought NUM 3.5 a short time ago
because my NUM 3.2 would not work with system 8.0. Now, you have NUM
4.0 and tell me that I must upgrade for best results.
I write as a consumer and as such, am hard pressed to find excuses
for purchasing yet another update to the software. While I realize
that there is a "bottom line" to think about--shareholder value, etc.
--but I don't buy it.
If you have a new version of Norton Utilities available, I would like
for you to SELL me the upgrade. Why, exactly, do you recommend that
I use version 4.0 instead of version 3.5? What other required changes
have been made besides the HFS+ compatibility? Why will 3.5 not work
with HFS+? What other problems can I expect with using 3.5 on my G3
machine?
I'm absolutely tired having to shell out more money for a product
which worked fine a few months ago. Why don't you sell subscriptions
to your software for 1-5 years to allow updates instead of making me
feel like a chump for deciding that $49.95 is an alright price to pay
for a utilities program for a personal computer--and in turn finding
out that the price was indeed too good to be true.
As it will probably turn out that I'm over a barrel and have no
adequate competition to turn to for another product, I will probably
end up purchasing the upgrade after all. Reassure me with a good
sales pitch and explain why the upgrade is a good idea, please.

Hi Chris:
If you purchased NUM 3.5 within the last 60 days or so, you probably
qualify for a free upgrade. Contact Symantec Customer Service at
800-441-7234 and talk to them about your situation.
If you are staying with Os8.0 and HFS formatting, then NUM 3.5.x is
appropriate for your machine. If you intend to upgrade and start
formating your drive with HFS+ and migrate to OS8.5 or later, then
NUM 4.0 is the product that will be supporting that migration.
Unfortunately, it's a fact of life that when Apple changes the OS to
add features that people want, they change the "rules" that
programmer have to abide by when writing software for the OS. If the
rules are broken, crashes and freezes occur. Sometimes the changes
are minor and updaters can be released (witness NUm 3.5.1 and NUM
3.5.2). Othertimes, the changes are major and require complete
rewriting of the software (such as the case with HFS+).
People who are happy with the older operating systems and the
software they depend on usually stay with the older versions of NUM
and are happy. Many people will probably stay with OS7.6 or OS8.0
and will stay with NUM 3.5.x.
Those of use who decide to take advantage of the newer Apple OS, have
to realize that one of the costs of doing this is upgrades and
updates to ALL of the software we run. In my case, I have have to
upgrade about 5 major software packages in order to run properly with
OS8.1 When OS8.5 comes out I'm sure that there will again be updates
and upgrades. Symantec is not alone in this. It's just the way the
computer industry is - you want the new OS features? Then you have
to upgrade software to take advantage of them and have a stable
machine.
