Hello Henry--Only version that will work is Speed Disk Online v4.0
Public Beta. This means that should you choose to use it, please be
aware that there are incompatabilities with it still. Some are known
and listed in the included Read Me files. Others are undocumented.
I'd advise you to choose very carefully to use it if you have
important data stored on your HD. Please make a back-up copy of your
HD. This is important. To find the public beta of Speed Disk v4.0,
please use the following link:
http://www.symantec.com/trialware/index.html. You will find the Speed
Disk beta posted there. It is a 30 day beta too. I cannot say for
certain that it is still available though. Please run DFA v8.2 prior
to using SD v4.0.

I have aStarMax3000/200, System version 7.5.3,Power PC processor,
32-bit adressing.
When I try to defragmemt my hard drive it asks for a start up disk.
On making a start up floppy, I am asked to insert Tools Disk? Your
program came preinstalled & I can't seem to find or make such a disk.
Any help you can give will be appreciated. I am inexperenced in
computer operation.
Also can I defragment one file at a time?
Thanks, Lee

Hi Lee:

Disk Tools is a disk that normally comes as part of the operating
system from Apple. Disk Tools is a stripped down (very small) system
folder that allows you to boot up from a floppy disk and run the Disk
First Aid program. Norton's wants to use it so that it can get the
small system folder to build you an emergency disk.

You should have received a CD ROM with your machine - check to see
if it is on there.

Otherwise, go to the Apple website (www.apple.com). I've seen Disk
Tools there in their software library for download.

Hope this helps.

I optimized my hard drive with Norton 3.1 and can't boot from my
startup disk, the Norton Utilities CD or the 8.0 System CD. I can
boot from an old system CD only. When running Norton, it crashes.
Disk Utilities says that the disk appears to be ok.

When calling Apple Tech Support, they informed me I should have used
3.5.3 to optimize the drive. How much damage have I done? Do I have
to initialize the disk?

Hi Sarah:

There are a couple of ways to go here. First, the version of NUM you
were using is not compatible with OS8.1.

Also, if your drive was formatted with the optional HFS extended
(HFS+) format introduced with OS8.1 (as I suspect it was from your
discussion), then you have damaged your directory structure. It is
recoverable, however. Contact Symantec Technical Support at
541-465-8440 and they can talk you through the process. Another
option is to go to the Apple Website at www.apple.com and download
the latest version of Disk First Aid (8.2). This program can repair
the damage.

To use Disk First Aid, copy it to a floppy and then boot your system
from the old system CD ROM just as you did before. Run Disk First
Aid from the floppy and select the hard drive for repair.

After you get the drive repaired, you should throw away the old
version of NUM. If your drive is indeed formatted with HFS+ there is
currently no version of NUM that is HFS+ compatible. NUM 4.0, which
is HFS+ compatible, will be released later this summer, at last
report from Symantec.

Let us know how this works and we can make further recommendations
depending on what happens.

Hi again Sarah:

Something else just struck me. Did you "optimize the disk" using
Speed Disk or just run Disk Doctor? What type of machine are you
running? Is it a G3 or an earlier model?

You say you ran NUM 3.1 and then you mention booting from the Norton
Utilities CD ROM - of which the earliest version released is NUM 3.5.

If you can provide this information them we might be able to help you
recover some files from the drive using either Volume Recover or
Unerase.
