While running Norton Disk Doctor, my Power Computing PowerCenter 120
(604 /132) crashed during the "Analyzing Files" test. There was a
"nervous" dialogue box on screen. Thereafter, the desktop will not
rebuild properly, (I tried using NUM, TechTool 1.1.6, and Conflict
Catcher 8) i.e., most icons are generic, and AppleEvents don't work
(e.g., "Mail" and "Browse the Internet"). Other wise the Finder and
other applications seem to work well. Is there any way to fix this
short of a clean install of the system or (gasp) reformatting the HD?

Hello David,
I'm not sure what may be causing the problem with the rebuilds but
here's a method that should work, as long as a system file isn't
damaged:
1. Launch FastFind (from the Apple menu choose Fast Find alias).
2. In the look for window type "Desktop d".
3. For every volume searched there should be a Desktop DB and a Desktop
DF file found.
4. Select all the Desktop DB and Desktop DF files.
5. From the File menu choose "move" and then to the right of move choose
the option "To Trash".
6. Quit Fast Find and restart your Macintosh.
This will cause all volumes to rebuild their desktop files. Please let
this proceed.
7. After the Desktop Files have been rebuilt throw a visible item (a
folder or unneeded document) into the trash and empty the Trash (this
will delete the invisible Desktop files that are in the Trash).

Please let me know if that helps or not.
